Fatal Shooting Outside Jacksonville Circle K Leaves One Dead, Suspect at Large

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A late-night shooting outside a Circle K convenience store in Jacksonville, Florida has left a man dead after an argument escalated into violence, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say the suspect fled the scene and remains at large.

What We Know About the Incident

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred on April 15, 2026, at a Circle K located on Square Lake Boulevard off Southside Boulevard. Investigators say the incident began as an argument inside the store before moving outside.

Once outside, the confrontation escalated, and the suspect allegedly shot the victim in the head. The victim, described as a man in his 30s, was transported to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the two individuals knew each other prior to the altercation.

The suspect, described as a Black male, fled the scene in a red Dodge Charger. Law enforcement officials are actively searching for him.

Violent Incidents at Commercial Properties

Shootings at or near commercial establishments such as convenience stores can raise concerns about safety and security measures in public spaces.

These incidents may involve:

  • Disputes escalating into violence
  • Lack of on-site security or surveillance
  • High-traffic areas where conflicts can quickly intensify
  • Limited intervention before situations become dangerous

Even when incidents appear isolated, they often prompt broader questions about prevention and accountability.

In addition to criminal prosecution, fatal shootings may also lead to civil liability depending on the circumstances.

Potential legal avenues may include:

  • Claims against the individual responsible for the shooting
  • Negligent security claims against property owners or businesses
  • Liability for failing to provide adequate safety measures in high-risk areas

These cases often require a detailed investigation into what occurred before, during, and after the incident.

Wrongful Death Claims Under Florida Law

Under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, Florida Statutes §§ 768.16–768.26, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue compensation if another party’s intentional or negligent actions caused their loved one’s death.

Damages may include:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Medical expenses related to the incident
  • Loss of financial support and services
  • Loss of companionship and protection
  • Mental pain and suffering

In cases involving intentional violence, punitive damages may also be available.

Investigation Ongoing

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the shooting and is seeking the public’s help in identifying and locating the suspect.
