Fatal Crash Shuts Down Westbound Dolphin Expressway in Miami-Dade County
A fatal crash on the Dolphin Expressway (State Road 836) forced the closure of westbound lanes Saturday morning in Miami-Dade County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
Troopers said the crash occurred just before 8:20 a.m. near Northwest 57th Avenue. Preliminary information released by FHP indicates that a Toyota traveling westbound struck the rear of a flatbed truck at a high rate of speed.
The driver of the Toyota, identified only as an adult male, was pronounced dead at the scene. The flatbed truck driver was not injured, troopers said.
Westbound lanes of the Dolphin Expressway remained closed at Northwest 57th Avenue for several hours while investigators processed the scene and cleared the roadway.
Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased driver or additional details regarding speed, traffic conditions, or other potential contributing factors.
Rear-End Collisions at Highway Speeds Are Often Fatal
Rear-end crashes at highway speeds can be particularly deadly, especially when a passenger vehicle collides with a commercial or flatbed truck. These crashes often involve significant force and may raise questions about:
- Traffic flow and congestion at the time of the crash
- Visibility and roadway conditions
- Whether the truck was stopped or slowing
- Whether proper warning devices or lighting were present
- Speed and braking distance
A full investigation is critical to understanding exactly how and why the collision occurred.
Legal Options After a Fatal Highway Crash
When a fatal crash occurs, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida law, depending on the circumstances. Even when a collision appears straightforward, multiple factors may contribute to liability.
A wrongful death claim may seek compensation for:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Loss of financial support and services
- Loss of companionship and protection
- Mental pain and suffering of surviving family members
In cases involving commercial vehicles, additional layers of insurance coverage and regulatory requirements may apply.
This tragic crash serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly lives can be lost on South Florida’s busy highways. Our condolences go out to the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
Anyone impacted by a fatal crash on the Dolphin Expressway or another Florida roadway may benefit from speaking with an experienced wrongful death attorney to better understand their rights and available legal options.
