Fatal Crash Closes I-95 in Brevard County for Hours: What We Know
A fatal crash on Interstate 95 in Brevard County brought northbound traffic to a standstill for nearly five hours on Monday, creating major disruptions during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the deadly collision occurred around 9:00 a.m. near mile marker 228 in Mims.
The crash involved a tractor-trailer and a CMTI MOT truck, a vehicle operated by Creative Management Technology Inc., an FDOT contractor responsible for setting up and operating highway information boards during incidents. At the time of the collision, the CMTI truck had its arrow board and lights activated to alert drivers of a vehicle fire ahead.
According to FHP investigators:
- A tractor-trailer traveling northbound on I-95 in the outside lane failed to slow down or move over, despite the active warning signs.
- The tractor-trailer slammed into the rear of the parked CMTI truck.
- The impact pushed both vehicles into the guardrail on the shoulder.
This type of crash is exactly what Florida’s Move Over Law (Florida Statute § 316.126) is designed to prevent. The law requires drivers to slow down or move over for emergency and maintenance vehicles displaying warning lights. Failure to follow these rules can have devastating consequences, as this tragic collision demonstrates.
There were two workers inside the CMTI truck:
- The driver, a man whose identity has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
- A 42-year-old passenger from St. Cloud suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Lake Monroe Hospital.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 63-year-old man from Orlando, was not injured and remained at the scene.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
FHP emphasizes that the tractor-trailer driver failed to slow or move over, a critical safety requirement when approaching emergency or maintenance vehicles. Move Over Law violations continue to be a leading cause of preventable highway worker deaths in Florida.
When large commercial trucks are involved, the consequences are often catastrophic due to their size, weight, and stopping distance. Work zone crashes frequently result in severe injuries or fatalities for road crews who rely on drivers to follow posted warnings.
