Elderly Victim Critically Injured in Vicious Dog Attack in Alachua County

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A 71-year-old man was critically injured Saturday night after a violent dog attack in Alachua County that left multiple people hurt and forced a sheriff’s deputy to shoot and kill the dog to stop the assault, according to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched to the scene around 7 p.m. and arrived to find the elderly man actively being mauled by a dog. Authorities said the attack was so severe that immediate lethal force was required to prevent further loss of life.

According to the sheriff’s office:

  • The dog attacked the 71-year-old victim, inflicting severe injuries and heavy bleeding
  • The victim’s daughter, who deputies say owns the dog, attempted to intervene and was bitten as well
  • When a deputy tried to separate the dog from the victim, the dog turned on the deputy and began biting
  • The deputy shot the dog to stop the ongoing attack

Deputies applied multiple tourniquets to the elderly victim at the scene in an effort to control life-threatening bleeding. He was transported to a trauma center and is listed in critical but stable condition.

The deputy was treated at a hospital and later released. The victim’s daughter suffered minor injuries. The dog died from the gunshot wound.

The sheriff’s office confirmed the incident remains under investigation. Officials did not release the dog’s breed or whether there had been any prior history of aggression involving the animal.

The attack comes as Florida lawmakers continue to address dog attack safety through legislation, including the recently passed “Pam Rock Act,” which strengthens protections for victims of dangerous dogs and expands accountability for owners.

Under Florida law, dog owners are held strictly liable for injuries caused by their dogs in most circumstances. This means victims do not need to prove negligence — only that the dog caused the injuries.

Potential legal claims may include:

  • Strict liability claims against the dog owner for severe bodily injuries
  • Premises liability claims if the attack occurred on private property
  • Claims for medical expenses, including emergency trauma care, surgeries, and rehabilitation
  • Pain and suffering damages, particularly given the brutality of the attack
  • Future care costs, if the victim suffers permanent disability or disfigurement

If the attack resulted in long-term impairment or wrongful death, additional claims may be available under Florida law.

Importantly, family relationships do not eliminate liability. Even when the dog belongs to a relative, victims may still pursue compensation through homeowners’ insurance or other applicable coverage.

The Serious Reality of Dog Attacks

Dog attacks involving elderly victims are often catastrophic due to increased vulnerability, slower reaction times, and higher risk of severe blood loss. This incident highlights the importance of:

  • Proper restraint and supervision of dogs
  • Immediate reporting of aggressive behavior
  • Understanding legal responsibilities of dog ownership

As the investigation continues, authorities may release more details about what led up to the attack and whether any prior warning signs existed.

Anyone with additional information related to the incident is encouraged to contact the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office.
