Eight People Ejected and Seriously Injured After Golf Cart Crash in Wesley Chapel

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

Eight people were seriously injured Saturday evening after a golf cart carrying multiple passengers overturned during a collision with a vehicle in Wesley Chapel, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred shortly before 6:30 p.m. on March 15, 2026, along Elam Road west of Callow Ford Drive in Wesley Chapel, Florida.

Authorities say the crash resulted in a rollover that ejected all occupants from the golf cart, sending eight people to the hospital with serious injuries.

According to investigators, a 43-year-old Wesley Chapel man was driving a golf cart eastbound in a designated golf cart lane on Elam Road. The driver attempted to make a U-turn in the roadway.

At the same time, a Honda sedan traveling behind the golf cart struck the vehicle as it turned into the path of traffic.

The Honda was being driven by a 17-year-old girl from Wesley Chapel, according to troopers.

The impact caused the golf cart to overturn violently, ejecting all eight occupants from the vehicle.

After the collision, the Honda left the roadway, traveled onto the shoulder, and partially entered a nearby pond before coming to a stop.

Troopers reported that all eight occupants of the golf cart were transported to hospitals with serious injuries.

Those injured included:

  • The 43-year-old golf cart driver
  • His wife
  • Their five children
  • A 16-year-old neighbor

Authorities have not released details about the exact nature of the victims’ injuries.

The 17-year-old driver of the Honda and her 17-year-old passenger were not injured in the crash.

Officials have not yet announced whether any charges will be filed.

Golf Cart Safety Concerns

Golf carts are increasingly used for transportation in residential communities throughout Florida, including many neighborhoods in Pasco County. However, golf carts offer significantly less protection than standard passenger vehicles.

Most golf carts do not have:

  • Seat belts
  • Airbags
  • Reinforced structural frames
  • Enclosed cabins

Because of this, occupants are especially vulnerable during collisions or rollovers. When golf carts overturn, passengers can easily be thrown from the vehicle, increasing the likelihood of severe injuries.

Large groups riding on a golf cart can also affect the vehicle’s balance and stability, making it easier for the cart to tip over during sudden maneuvers or impacts.

Serious crashes involving golf carts and passenger vehicles often raise complex questions about liability. Determining fault requires investigators to analyze the actions of all drivers involved and whether traffic laws were followed.

In this incident, investigators may evaluate several factors, including whether the golf cart driver safely executed the U-turn and whether the approaching vehicle had sufficient time to avoid the collision.

Potentially responsible parties in golf cart accidents may include:

  • Drivers who fail to yield the right of way
  • Motor vehicle drivers who are speeding, distracted, or driving recklessly
  • Parents or guardians if minors are involved in negligent driving
  • Property owners or community associations responsible for roadway design or golf cart access rules
  • Manufacturers if vehicle defects contribute to a crash

When crashes cause serious injuries, victims may have the right to pursue compensation for:

  • Medical expenses
  • Long-term rehabilitation or therapy
  • Lost income
  • Pain and suffering
  • Permanent disability or disfigurement

If negligence contributed to the crash, injured victims and their families may be able to pursue personal injury claims under Florida law.

Investigation Ongoing

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the golf cart crash that occurred on Elam Road in Wesley Chapel.

Authorities have not yet determined whether charges will be filed or if additional factors contributed to the collision.
