Driver Seriously Injured in Rollover Crash on I-95 in Brevard County
A serious crash on Interstate 95 early Sunday morning left one driver hospitalized and caused significant traffic delays, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The accident occurred in the southbound lanes of I-95 near mile marker 206 and involved two vehicles:
- A 2021 Nissan Maxima driven by a 62-year-old Cocoa man.
- A Dodge Ram 2500 pulling a trailer.
FHP has not yet confirmed how the crash unfolded, but officials said the Nissan rolled over after the collision. The driver of the Nissan was transported as a trauma alert patient to Holmes Regional Hospital with serious injuries.
The driver and passenger of the Dodge Ram were not transported to the hospital, and no additional injuries have been reported.
Following the crash, all southbound lanes were closed for a period of time while first responders secured the scene and cleared debris. The roadway has since reopened.
Rollover crashes account for a small percentage of total vehicle accidents but are disproportionately deadly. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):
- Rollover crashes are more likely to cause serious or fatal injuries due to roof crush, ejection, and multiple impacts.
- Speed, overcorrection, and impact with larger vehicles (such as trucks) often contribute to rollovers.
- Wearing a seatbelt significantly reduces the risk of ejection, one of the leading causes of death in rollover accidents.
In this case, investigators have not confirmed whether seatbelt usage or other factors played a role.
Legal Options After a Rollover Accident
When a rollover crash results in serious injury, the injured party or their family may have legal options depending on the circumstances:
- Negligence by another driver: If the Dodge Ram’s driver caused or contributed to the crash, the Nissan driver may pursue a personal injury claim for medical expenses, lost income, and pain and suffering.
- Vehicle or trailer defects: If improper maintenance, defective tires, or trailer issues played a role, liability could extend to manufacturers or maintenance providers.
- Roadway hazards: Poor road design, debris, or inadequate signage may also contribute to rollover accidents and could involve municipal liability.
In Florida, victims of serious car crashes often face steep medical bills, long-term rehabilitation, and lost wages. Filing a claim can help recover damages to ease the financial burden and hold responsible parties accountable.
The I-95 rollover crash in Brevard County highlights how quickly a routine drive can turn catastrophic. While the 62-year-old Cocoa man remains hospitalized with serious injuries, investigators continue to examine what led to the accident.
