Driver Killed After Pickup Overturns in I-95 Crash in Pompano Beach

Flanagan & Bodenheimer

A 35-year-old Deerfield Beach man was killed Monday afternoon after his pickup truck overturned several times during a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Pompano Beach, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at approximately 3:57 p.m. on October 5, 2026, in the northbound lanes of I-95 south of Sample Road.

According to FHP, the collision involved a black 2021 Ford F-150 and a green 2000 Toyota Solara. The driver of the Ford was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Toyota driver, a 29-year-old Lake Worth Beach man, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Broward Health North.

What Happened in the Pompano Beach I-95 Crash?

According to the preliminary FHP investigation, the Ford F-150 was traveling north in the center unrestricted lane of I-95. The Toyota was traveling directly behind the pickup.

Troopers said the Toyota driver attempted to change into the inside unrestricted lane but did not complete the maneuver safely.

The Toyota reportedly drifted partially onto the divider separating the I-95 express lanes from the regular travel lanes. Its left side then struck the delineator poles along the express lane divider.

According to FHP, the Toyota driver attempted to correct the vehicle back toward the right.

The Toyota then traveled back into the center lane, where its right side collided with the left side of the Ford F-150.

Ford F-150 Overturned Several Times

Following the impact, the Ford rotated counterclockwise and traveled toward the express lanes.

FHP said the pickup overturned multiple times before coming to rest on its right side, facing southwest. The wrecked pickup blocked both northbound express lanes.

The Toyota came to rest across the inside and center unrestricted lanes.

The 35-year-old Ford driver suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the crash scene. Authorities had not publicly released his name as of the latest report.

The Toyota driver survived and was taken to Broward Health North with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Who May Be Liable for an Unsafe Lane Change Crash in Florida?

FHP’s preliminary account indicates that the collision occurred after the Toyota driver attempted to change lanes and subsequently lost control.

Florida law requires drivers to determine that a lane change can be made safely before moving from their current lane. Under Florida Statute § 316.089, a vehicle should not move from its lane until the driver has first determined that the movement can be made safely.

However, an initial police account does not by itself establish civil liability. Investigators may examine physical evidence, vehicle damage, witness statements, available video footage and other evidence before determining exactly what happened.

The FHP investigation into this crash remains ongoing, and authorities had not announced whether any citations or criminal charges would be filed.

Overcorrection Can Lead to Serious Highway Crashes

The sequence described by FHP also highlights the dangers associated with losing control of a vehicle at interstate speeds.

When a vehicle leaves its intended path, a sudden steering correction can cause the driver to lose additional control. Depending on speed, roadway conditions and the type of vehicle involved, this can result in a sideswipe collision, rollover or multi-vehicle crash.

Pickup trucks and other vehicles with higher centers of gravity may also face an increased risk of rolling over under certain circumstances.

In this crash, investigators reported that the Toyota first contacted the express lane delineator poles before moving back across the roadway and striking the pickup.

Wrongful Death Claims After a Fatal Florida Car Accident

When a person dies because of another driver’s negligence, certain surviving family members may have rights under the Florida Wrongful Death Act.

Depending on the circumstances, recoverable damages may include certain medical and funeral expenses, lost financial support and services, and damages suffered by qualifying survivors.

The availability of compensation depends on factors including the victim’s family relationships, the evidence establishing negligence and any available insurance coverage.

A Florida wrongful death attorney can investigate the collision independently, preserve evidence and determine which parties and insurance policies may be responsible for the family’s losses.

Evidence That May Be Important After an I-95 Rollover Crash

Because this collision occurred on a heavily traveled interstate, several forms of evidence could potentially help establish how the crash unfolded.

Traffic or surveillance cameras may have captured the vehicles immediately before the collision. Investigators may also examine vehicle event data, physical marks on the roadway, damage to the express lane delineators and damage patterns on both vehicles.

Witness statements can also help determine the vehicles’ positions, speeds and movements leading up to impact.

When a crash results in a death, preserving this evidence as soon as possible can be particularly important because some video and electronic records may not be retained indefinitely.

FHP Continues Investigating Fatal Pompano Beach Crash

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the October 5 crash on northbound I-95 south of Sample Road in Pompano Beach.

According to FHP’s preliminary findings, the Toyota driver attempted to change lanes, struck express lane delineator poles and then moved back into the center lane, where the Toyota collided with the Ford F-150.

The impact caused the pickup to overturn multiple times.

The 35-year-old Deerfield Beach man driving the Ford died at the scene. The 29-year-old Lake Worth Beach man driving the Toyota was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities had not released the identities of either driver or announced whether charges would be filed as the investigation continued.

We extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of the man who lost his life in this tragic crash.
