Driver Cited After Falling Asleep Behind the Wheel, Causing Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-75 in Pasco County

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A pickup truck driver was cited for careless driving after reportedly falling asleep behind the wheel and causing a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 75 in Pasco County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the collision, though the crash caused significant vehicle damage and left multiple vehicles disabled.

What We Know About the Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on Interstate 75 in Pasco County on Wednesday, July 9, 2026.

Investigators reported that:

  • A pickup truck driver fell asleep while traveling on I-75.
  • The pickup drifted out of its lane and struck the rear of another vehicle.
  • After the initial impact, the pickup rotated and collided with a second vehicle.
  • The force of the collision pushed another vehicle into the one traveling ahead of it.
  • The pickup eventually came to rest on the shoulder of the interstate.

Dash camera footage released by authorities captured the sequence of events, showing the pickup crossing into another lane before triggering the chain-reaction collision.

Despite the significant damage, the Florida Highway Patrol confirmed that no one involved in the crash suffered injuries.

Driver Issued Citation

Following its investigation, the Florida Highway Patrol cited the pickup truck driver for operating a motor vehicle in a careless or negligent manner.

According to the crash report:

  • Four vehicles were involved.
  • Three of the vehicles were rendered inoperable.
  • Property damage was estimated at approximately $32,500.

The investigation has concluded with the issuance of the traffic citation.

Drowsy Driving Can Be Just as Dangerous as Impaired Driving

Fatigue is a significant contributor to motor vehicle crashes across the United States.

Drivers who fall asleep behind the wheel may experience:

  • Slower reaction times.
  • Reduced awareness of surrounding traffic.
  • Impaired judgment.
  • Complete loss of vehicle control.

Unlike distracted driving, a sleeping driver is unable to react to changing traffic conditions, often resulting in high-impact collisions.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has repeatedly warned that drowsy driving can impair motorists in ways similar to alcohol impairment.

Although no injuries were reported in this incident, crashes caused by fatigued or negligent drivers can result in significant financial losses.

Individuals whose vehicles are damaged in a collision may have the right to pursue compensation for:

  • Vehicle repair or replacement costs.
  • Rental vehicle expenses.
  • Towing and storage fees.
  • Diminished value of their vehicle.
  • Other out-of-pocket expenses resulting from the crash.

If a similar collision results in injuries, victims may also be entitled to recover damages for:

  • Medical expenses.
  • Future medical treatment.
  • Lost wages.
  • Loss of earning capacity.
  • Pain and suffering.
  • Permanent disability or impairment.

Depending on the circumstances, evidence that a driver fell asleep behind the wheel may be an important factor in determining negligence during a civil claim.

Evidence Can Help Determine Liability

Even in crashes without serious injuries, preserving evidence can be important if insurance disputes arise.

Relevant evidence may include:

  • Dash camera footage.
  • Florida Highway Patrol crash reports.
  • Photographs of vehicle damage.
  • Witness statements.
  • Vehicle event data recorder information.
  • Repair estimates.
  • Traffic camera footage, if available.

This evidence can help establish how the collision occurred and support insurance or legal claims.

Pasco County Crash Statistics

According to data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Pasco County has recorded thousands of traffic crashes so far in 2026, including numerous injury crashes and dozens of fatal collisions.

The incident serves as another reminder of the importance of remaining alert behind the wheel and avoiding driving when fatigued.
