A driver has been arrested months after a devastating crash on Interstate 4 in Volusia County, Florida that left three people dead, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The Dangers of Chain-Reaction Crashes on Highways
Crashes on major highways like I-4 can quickly escalate into catastrophic events, especially when multiple vehicles are involved.
Common contributing factors include:
- Unsafe lane changes
- High speeds and dense traffic conditions
- Limited reaction time for surrounding drivers
- Secondary impacts involving additional vehicles
When motorcycles and passenger vehicles are involved, the risk of fatal injuries increases significantly.
Legal Consequences of Leaving the Scene
Leaving the scene of a crash involving injury or death is a felony offense under Florida law and carries severe criminal penalties.
In addition to criminal charges, drivers may face civil liability for the damages caused.
Legal issues that may arise include:
- Responsibility for causing the crash
- Liability for all resulting injuries and fatalities
- Potential punitive damages due to fleeing the scene
- Insurance implications and coverage disputes
Hit-and-run cases often involve extensive investigation to identify the responsible party.
Wrongful Death Claims Under Florida Law
Under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, Florida Statutes §§ 768.16–768.26, families who lose loved ones in fatal crashes may pursue compensation if negligence contributed to the incident.
Damages may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Loss of financial support and future earnings
- Loss of companionship and protection
- Mental pain and suffering
In cases involving reckless conduct or fleeing the scene, additional damages may be available.
