A late-night crash on Interstate 275 in St. Petersburg, Florida has resulted in multiple criminal charges after a driver allegedly under the influence slammed into a stopped Florida Road Ranger vehicle, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred in an active construction zone where extensive warnings were already in place.
What We Know About the Crash
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 11:40 p.m. on April 30, 2026, in the northbound lanes of I-275, just north of 4th Street North in St. Petersburg.
Troopers say a 32-year-old man was driving a Honda Accord northbound when he failed to notice a stopped Florida Department of Transportation Road Ranger truck in the inside lane.

Despite these warnings, the driver struck the rear of the Road Ranger truck.

The Dangers of Construction Zones
Construction zones are among the most hazardous environments for both drivers and roadside workers.
Even with safety measures in place, risks remain high when drivers fail to stay alert.
Common dangers include:
- Sudden lane closures
- Reduced space for maneuvering
- Stopped vehicles in active lanes
- Workers and emergency personnel nearby
Drivers are required to slow down and follow all posted warnings.
Move Over Law and Driver Responsibility
Florida’s Move Over Law requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching stopped emergency or service vehicles.
This includes:
- Law enforcement vehicles
- Tow trucks and Road Rangers
- Construction and utility vehicles
Failure to comply not only violates the law but puts lives at risk.
Legal Implications of DUI Crashes
Driving under the influence is a serious offense, especially when it results in a crash.
Potential consequences include:
- Criminal penalties, including jail time
- License suspension or revocation
- Civil liability for injuries or damages
Even when injuries are considered minor, DUI-related crashes can carry significant legal consequences.
Injury Claims for Victims
Individuals injured in crashes involving impaired drivers may be entitled to compensation for:
- Medical expenses
- Lost wages
- Pain and suffering
These claims can help victims recover after being harmed by negligent or reckless drivers.
Investigation Ongoing
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
