Driver Arrested After Dania Beach Hit-and-Run Involving Man in Wheelchair

A 70-year-old driver has been arrested following a hit-and-run crash in Dania Beach involving a man in a wheelchair, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities identified the driver as Jean Pierre Louis. He was arrested Thursday after surveillance video captured a van striking wheelchair user Jorge Luis Gonzalez and leaving the scene.

What Happened in the Dania Beach Hit-and-Run?

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the collision happened Monday near Southwest 1st Street and Southwest 1st Avenue in Dania Beach.

Gonzalez, who is a double amputee and uses a wheelchair, said he was on his way to breakfast when a turning van struck him.

Surveillance footage reportedly captured the collision. The impact caused Gonzalez’s wheelchair to spin around and strike the side of the van.

Gonzalez later described how close he believed he came to being seriously injured, explaining that he feared his wheelchair could have bounced off the sidewalk and overturned.

Driver Allegedly Spoke to Victim Before Leaving

Authorities said the driver stopped and briefly spoke with Gonzalez after the collision.

However, investigators allege that the driver then returned to the van and left the area rather than remaining at the scene.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office subsequently identified Louis as the driver and arrested him on August 13.

Louis was booked into jail on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving damage to property. Attorney information was not immediately available.

The charge is an allegation, and Louis is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
