Deltona Man Injured in Rollover Crash Involving Semi on SR-417 Near Oviedo
A serious two-vehicle crash involving an SUV and a semitrailer caused major traffic delays Thursday afternoon on State Road 417 near Oviedo, leaving one man injured and shutting down lanes for hours as authorities investigated.
The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
According to FHP, the collision occurred around 4:10 p.m. Thursday on State Road 417 southbound near the Red Bug Lake Road exit in Seminole County.
Investigators say a 45-year-old Deltona man was driving a 2015 Lincoln Navigator southbound in the inside lane when the crash sequence began.
Troopers reported that:
- The SUV traveled onto the left shoulder
- The front left of the vehicle struck a crash attenuator
- The impact caused the SUV to overturn
- The overturned vehicle then crossed multiple southbound lanes
- A semitrailer traveling on the roadway struck the overturned SUV
Emergency responders arrived quickly and transported the injured driver to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the tractor-trailer — a 68-year-old Titusville man — was not injured in the crash and remained at the scene, according to FHP.
No additional injuries were reported.
Major Traffic Delays on SR-417
The rollover crash caused significant disruption along State Road 417 southbound as emergency crews worked to assist the injured driver, investigate the crash, and remove damaged vehicles from the roadway.
Authorities temporarily shut down lanes of the highway for several hours before reopening them later in the evening.
Motorists in the Oviedo area experienced heavy congestion and were urged to seek alternate routes while the scene was cleared.
Common Causes of Rollover Crashes on Florida Highways
Rollover crashes are among the most dangerous types of motor vehicle accidents and often occur when a vehicle strikes a fixed object or loses control at highway speeds.
Some common factors that can contribute to rollover collisions include:
- Sudden steering maneuvers
- Tire or mechanical failures
- Distracted or fatigued driving
- Speeding or unsafe lane changes
- Roadway hazards or debris
When rollovers occur on busy highways, secondary collisions with other vehicles — including large commercial trucks — can significantly increase the risk of serious injury or death.
Potential Liability in Multi-Vehicle and Rollover Crashes
Even when a crash initially appears to involve only one driver losing control, multiple parties may still share legal responsibility depending on the circumstances.
Potentially liable parties in rollover and secondary-impact crashes may include:
- Other drivers who contributed to unsafe road conditions
- Commercial trucking companies or drivers
- Government entities responsible for roadway design or maintenance
- Manufacturers of defective vehicle parts
A thorough investigation is often necessary to determine whether negligence, vehicle defects, or hazardous roadway conditions played a role.
Injured victims may be entitled to compensation for:
- Medical expenses
- Lost wages
- Pain and suffering
- Future rehabilitation or treatment
Investigation Ongoing
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the SR-417 rollover crash near Oviedo to determine the precise cause and whether any additional factors contributed to the collision.
As authorities work to piece together what happened, the incident serves as a reminder of how quickly highway crashes can escalate — especially when a rollover leads to a secondary collision with a large commercial vehicle.
