DeLand Man Killed in Tragic Single-Vehicle Crash on I-4 in Volusia County
A 38-year-old man from DeLand was killed late Wednesday night after his vehicle veered off Interstate 4 and struck a fence and several trees, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The crash occurred around 10 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-4 near DeBary Avenue, in Volusia County. Troopers say the man was driving a 2018 Honda Civic when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle left the roadway and crashed.
Upon impact, the car struck a fence and then collided with two trees before coming to a stop. Emergency responders pronounced the driver dead at the scene. FHP confirmed that the man was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
Authorities have not yet released the man’s identity, pending next-of-kin notification. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Single-Vehicle Crashes: A Common but Serious Risk
While multi-car collisions often receive more attention, single-vehicle accidents like this one are more common than many realize. These crashes can result from several factors, including:
- Driver fatigue or distraction
- Mechanical failure or tire blowouts
- Poor weather or road conditions
- Sudden medical emergencies
- Speeding or overcorrection after veering off the roadway
Even when only one vehicle is involved, such crashes can be fatal—especially when trees, poles, or guardrails are struck.
Interstate 4 has long been recognized as one of Florida’s most dangerous highways, with frequent reports of fatal crashes between Volusia and Seminole counties. The Florida Highway Patrol continues to urge motorists to stay alert, avoid distractions, and maintain safe speeds, particularly when driving at night or in low-visibility conditions.
