Daycare Worker Arrested After Allegedly Throwing, Hitting, and Kicking Children in Marion County
A Marion County daycare worker has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of child abuse after surveillance video allegedly captured her physically harming several young children at a Summerfield childcare facility.
Authorities say the disturbing incidents occurred at a local daycare and were uncovered after an injured child prompted an investigation.
According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, 31-year-old Laura Flores was arrested on three counts of child abuse following an investigation into incidents at Bright Beginnings Learning Center located on U.S. Highway 441 in Summerfield.
The investigation began earlier this month when the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) received a report about a child who had been injured while in daycare.
Detectives with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation and reviewed surveillance footage from inside the facility.
Surveillance Video Allegedly Shows Abuse
Investigators say video footage captured multiple incidents involving Flores and several children under her care.
According to deputies, the footage showed Flores:
- Picking up a child and throwing the child onto a mat
- Hitting a child in the back of the head
- Kicking another child, causing the child to fall
- Striking a child in the abdomen
- Slapping a child in the face
- Placing her foot on a child
Authorities say the video revealed incidents involving multiple children at the daycare.
Following the review of the footage and investigation, Flores was arrested and transported to the Marion County Jail, where she was booked on a $15,000 bond.
Ongoing Investigation and Possible Additional Victims
Law enforcement officials have not indicated whether additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues. Authorities may review more footage and speak with parents and staff to determine whether other children were harmed.
Officials also have not released the ages or identities of the children involved.
Legal Options for Families After Daycare Abuse
When children are harmed at a daycare facility, families may have both criminal and civil legal options. In addition to criminal charges against the individual caregiver, daycare centers and operators may face liability if:
- Proper supervision and training were lacking
- Background checks were inadequate
- Prior complaints or warning signs were ignored
- Safety policies and procedures were not enforced
Civil claims can help families recover compensation for medical expenses, emotional trauma, and other damages resulting from abuse or neglect.
Protecting Children in Childcare Settings
This case highlights the importance of:
- Thorough background screening for daycare employees
- Continuous supervision and training
- Prompt reporting of injuries or suspicious behavior
- Immediate investigation of complaints
Parents who suspect abuse or neglect at a childcare facility should report concerns to law enforcement and the Florida Department of Children and Families as soon as possible.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the alleged abuse at Bright Beginnings Learning Center. Additional details may be released as the case progresses.
