Cyclist Killed After Being Struck by Pickup Truck in Ocala

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A 68-year-old cyclist has died after being struck by a pickup truck late Thursday night in Ocala, according to police. The fatal crash remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the circumstances leading up to the collision.

According to the Ocala Police Department, the crash happened near the 2000 block of Southwest College Road, close to a Target store and a RaceTrac gas station.

Investigators say the cyclist was on the south side of the roadway and was attempting to cross when he entered the eastbound travel lanes. At that time, a pickup truck traveling eastbound struck him.

Emergency responders transported the cyclist to a nearby hospital following the crash. Despite life-saving efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries.

The identity of the victim has not yet been publicly released.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding the pickup truck driver or whether any citations or charges will be filed. It is also unclear whether lighting, roadway conditions, speed, or visibility played a role in the crash.

The Ocala Police Department continues to investigate the fatal incident and is expected to release more information as it becomes available.

Bicycle Accidents in Florida

Fatal bicycle crashes remain a serious concern across Florida, particularly on high-traffic roadways and commercial corridors. Collisions involving cyclists often result in catastrophic or fatal injuries due to the lack of protection compared to occupants in passenger vehicles.

Common factors in bicycle-vehicle crashes include:

  • Failure of drivers to yield to cyclists
  • Poor visibility or lighting conditions
  • Unsafe roadway crossings
  • Speeding or distracted driving
  • Limited or missing bike lanes

Potential Liability After a Fatal Bicycle Crash

When a cyclist is killed in a vehicle collision, investigators typically review all available evidence to determine fault. Depending on the findings, liability may rest with:

  • The driver of the vehicle
  • A third party whose negligence contributed to the crash
  • A governmental entity responsible for dangerous roadway design or poor lighting

Families who lose a loved one in a fatal bicycle crash may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim to recover compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and emotional suffering.

Continuing Updates Expected

The investigation into the Ocala cyclist’s death remains active. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant information is encouraged to contact local authorities.

Updates will be provided as officials continue to determine what led to this tragic late-night collision.
