Crystal River Man Killed in E-Bike Crash with Tractor-Trailer in Sumter County

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A 65-year-old Crystal River man was killed Tuesday afternoon after an e-bike crash involving a tractor-trailer in Sumter County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The fatal collision occurred on County Road 48 and remains under investigation as troopers work to determine exactly what happened.

What We Know About the Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 2:00 p.m. on July 14, 2026, on County Road 48, east of County Road 575 in Sumter County.

Investigators reported that:

  • A 65-year-old Crystal River man was riding an electric bicycle eastbound along the south shoulder of County Road 48.
  • A tractor-trailer driven by a 70-year-old man from Valdosta, Georgia, was also traveling eastbound.
  • During the incident, the e-bike overturned in the roadway.
  • The rider was subsequently struck by the tractor-trailer.
  • The e-bike rider was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the tractor-trailer remained at the scene.

The Florida Highway Patrol has not released the identity of the victim pending notification of his family.

Investigation Continues

The Florida Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the fatal collision.

Investigators will likely examine:

  • The sequence of events leading up to the crash.
  • Roadway and shoulder conditions.
  • Vehicle speeds.
  • Visibility at the time of the incident.
  • Whether mechanical issues contributed to the e-bike overturning.
  • Witness statements.
  • Physical evidence from the scene.
  • Any available surveillance or dash camera footage.

No citations or criminal charges have been announced.

E-Bike Riders Face Significant Risks Around Large Commercial Vehicles

Electric bicycles have become increasingly popular throughout Florida, but riders remain especially vulnerable when traveling near motor vehicles, particularly large commercial trucks.

Because tractor-trailers require greater stopping distances and have substantial blind spots, collisions involving commercial vehicles can result in catastrophic or fatal injuries.

Every fatal crash involving an e-bike deserves a thorough investigation before conclusions are reached about how the collision occurred.

A preliminary crash report does not determine legal liability. A complete investigation is necessary to determine whether negligence contributed to the collision.

Depending on the facts established during the investigation, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes §§768.16–768.26).

Potentially liable parties could include:

  • A negligent motor vehicle driver.
  • A trucking company, if violations of state or federal safety regulations contributed to the crash.
  • A maintenance company responsible for servicing the commercial vehicle.
  • A manufacturer if a defective vehicle or e-bike component contributed to the incident.
  • Other parties whose negligence may have played a role.

If negligence is established, eligible family members may be entitled to compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial expenses.
  • Medical expenses incurred before death.
  • Loss of financial support and future income.
  • Loss of companionship, guidance, and protection.
  • Mental pain and suffering for eligible survivors.

Civil claims are separate from the Florida Highway Patrol’s investigation and focus on determining whether negligence contributed to the fatal collision.

Evidence Can Be Critical in Commercial Vehicle Cases

Commercial vehicle crashes often require extensive investigation and preservation of evidence.

Important evidence may include:

  • Florida Highway Patrol crash reports.
  • Electronic logging device (ELD) records.
  • Truck maintenance and inspection records.
  • Event data recorder information.
  • Crash reconstruction analysis.
  • Surveillance or dash camera footage.
  • Witness statements.
  • Photographs and measurements from the crash scene.

Prompt preservation of this evidence can be essential in determining how the collision occurred and whether negligence was involved.

Investigation Remains Active

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal e-bike crash on County Road 48 in Sumter County.

Additional information, including the victim’s identity and the cause of the collision, may be released as the investigation progresses.

The loss of a loved one in a traffic collision is a heartbreaking tragedy. We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the Crystal River man who lost his life and to everyone affected by this devastating incident.
