Crash Forces Closure of 17th Avenue Bridge in Miami, Police Investigating

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A crash in Miami Wednesday afternoon prompted authorities to shut down the 17th Avenue Bridge in both directions, causing traffic disruptions as investigators responded to the scene.

Officials have released limited information about the collision, and the investigation remains ongoing.

What We Know About the Crash

According to the Miami Police Department, the crash occurred on July 22, 2026, on the 17th Avenue Bridge near Northwest 14th through Northwest 18th streets.

Police closed the bridge in both directions while emergency crews responded and investigators examined the scene.

Aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed two heavily damaged vehicles that appeared to have been involved in the collision.

At this time, authorities have not released information regarding:

  • The number of people involved.
  • Whether anyone was injured.
  • The cause of the crash.
  • Whether additional vehicles were involved.
  • When the bridge will fully reopen.

Motorists were urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes while the investigation continued.

Investigation Remains Ongoing

The Miami Police Department continues to investigate the collision.

Officials have not yet announced what led to the crash or whether any citations or criminal charges may be issued.

As part of the investigation, officers may examine:

  • Vehicle speeds.
  • Driver distraction.
  • Following distance.
  • Unsafe lane changes.
  • Mechanical failures.
  • Roadway conditions.
  • Witness statements.
  • Surveillance or traffic camera footage.
  • Event Data Recorder (“black box”) information from the vehicles involved.

A complete investigation will help determine how the collision occurred and whether negligence contributed to the crash.

Bridge Crashes Can Create Significant Traffic Disruptions

Crashes occurring on bridges often present unique challenges for emergency responders because limited roadway space can restrict traffic flow and complicate rescue operations.

Even when injuries are minor, bridge closures can lead to substantial traffic congestion as investigators work to safely document the scene and remove damaged vehicles.

Investigators also assess whether any collision caused damage to roadway infrastructure before traffic is allowed to resume.

A preliminary police investigation does not determine legal liability.

Depending on the results of the investigation, one or more parties may be responsible for causing the collision.

Potentially liable parties may include:

  • A negligent driver.
  • The owner of a vehicle.
  • An employer, if a driver was acting within the scope of employment.
  • A vehicle manufacturer if a mechanical defect contributed to the crash.
  • Other parties whose negligence played a role.

If negligence is established, injured victims may have the right to seek compensation for:

  • Medical expenses.
  • Future medical treatment.
  • Lost wages.
  • Reduced earning capacity.
  • Pain and suffering.
  • Property damage.
  • Other damages available under Florida law.

Every crash is unique, and liability depends on the facts established during the investigation.

Preserving Evidence Is Critical

Evidence collected immediately following a traffic collision can be essential in determining exactly what occurred.

Important evidence may include:

  • Dash camera footage.
  • Surveillance and traffic camera recordings.
  • Event Data Recorder (“black box”) information.
  • Crash scene photographs.
  • Witness statements.
  • Police reports.
  • Vehicle inspection records.
  • Accident reconstruction findings.

Prompt preservation of this evidence can help investigators accurately reconstruct the collision and identify any contributing factors.

Investigation Continues

The Miami Police Department continues to investigate the crash on the 17th Avenue Bridge.

Additional information regarding injuries, the cause of the collision, and when the bridge fully reopened may be released as the investigation progresses.

Hoping for the Safety of Everyone Involved

Traffic crashes can have lasting physical, emotional, and financial consequences, even when few details are initially available. We hope everyone involved in this incident is safe and that investigators are able to determine exactly what led to the collision.
