Crash Closes Florida’s Turnpike West of Boca Raton; 2 Motorcyclists Seriously Injured

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A multi-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle shut down lanes of Florida’s Turnpike west of Boca Raton Sunday afternoon, leaving two riders hospitalized with serious injuries, according to authorities.

The crash occurred just beyond Exit 75 at Glades Road and was reported around 5:22 p.m., according to FL511. All lanes were reopened approximately two hours later.

According to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, initial 911 calls provided conflicting information about whether the crash occurred in the northbound or southbound lanes.

Emergency crews from both Palm Beach County Fire Rescue and Broward County Fire Rescue responded.

Upon arrival, responders located a four-vehicle crash in the southbound lanes. The incident ultimately impacted traffic in both directions of the Turnpike, which consists of three lanes each way in that area.

Officials confirmed that two individuals riding a motorcycle struck the median and were ejected from the bike.

Both riders were classified as trauma alerts, indicating potentially life-threatening injuries.

Palm Beach County’s Trauma Hawk helicopter was initially launched. However, once first responders stabilized the patients and observed that northbound lanes were fully stopped — allowing for rapid ground transport — crews determined it would be faster to transport the victims by ambulance.

Both patients were taken by ground units to a Palm Beach County trauma center, with the nearest facility being Delray Beach Medical Center. The helicopter response was canceled before landing.

All other individuals involved in the crash denied injury and declined transport.

Investigation Underway

The Florida Highway Patrol will lead the investigation into what caused the crash.

Investigators will likely evaluate:

  • Speed and lane positioning
  • Merging or lane change activity
  • Following distance
  • Roadway and median conditions
  • Possible driver distraction

High-speed roadway crashes involving motorcycles often result in severe injuries due to limited protection for riders, especially when ejection occurs.

Motorcycle crashes on major highways like Florida’s Turnpike frequently involve complex liability issues, particularly when multiple vehicles are involved.

In serious injury cases, victims may be entitled to compensation for:

  • Emergency and trauma care
  • Air or ground medical transport
  • Ongoing rehabilitation
  • Lost wages and diminished earning capacity
  • Pain and suffering

Determining fault often requires crash reconstruction, review of traffic camera footage, and analysis of vehicle damage and roadway evidence.

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the multi-vehicle crash beyond Exit 75 at Glades Road.
