Crash Blocks Two Northbound Lanes on Florida’s Turnpike in Delray Beach

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A traffic crash on Florida’s Turnpike caused significant delays for northbound motorists Saturday afternoon after blocking two travel lanes near Delray Beach, according to Florida 511.

Although officials classified the collision as a minor crash, the lane closures created congestion along one of South Florida’s busiest highways as emergency crews responded to the scene.

What We Know About the Crash

According to Florida 511, the crash occurred at approximately 2:21 p.m. on July 4, 2026, just north of Mile Marker 83 on Florida’s Turnpike in Delray Beach.

Authorities reported that:

  • The crash occurred in the northbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike.
  • Two left travel lanes were blocked following the collision.
  • The incident was classified as a minor crash.
  • Motorists experienced traffic delays while emergency crews worked at the scene.

As of the latest update, officials had not released information regarding:

  • The number of vehicles involved.
  • Whether anyone was injured.
  • The cause of the crash.
  • Whether any citations were issued.

The incident remains under investigation.

Lane Closures Can Create Dangerous Conditions

Even crashes involving relatively minor damage can lead to hazardous driving conditions when travel lanes are blocked.

Traffic congestion caused by lane closures often increases the risk of secondary collisions as drivers suddenly brake, merge into adjacent lanes, or encounter stopped traffic around curves or overpasses.

Motorists approaching crash scenes should reduce their speed, remain alert, and avoid sudden lane changes whenever possible.

Florida’s Move Over Law

Drivers approaching emergency vehicles or roadside service personnel are required to comply with Florida’s Move Over Law under Florida Statute §316.126.

The law requires motorists to:

  • Move over one lane when it is safe to do so if emergency vehicles, tow trucks, Road Rangers, or other authorized service vehicles are stopped on the roadside.
  • If changing lanes is not possible, reduce speed appropriately while passing the scene.

These requirements are designed to protect first responders and roadside workers from preventable secondary crashes.

Florida Traffic Laws That May Apply

Because investigators have not released the cause of the collision, no determination of fault has been made.

Depending on the evidence, investigators may evaluate whether any provisions of Florida traffic law contributed to the crash, including:

  • Florida Statute §316.1925, governing careless driving.
  • Florida Statute §316.0895, requiring drivers to maintain a safe following distance.
  • Statutes governing unsafe lane changes or failure to maintain a single lane.

Any findings regarding liability will depend on the results of the ongoing investigation.

If another driver’s negligence caused or contributed to the crash, injured victims may be entitled to pursue compensation for damages, including:

  • Medical expenses.
  • Lost income.
  • Property damage.
  • Future medical treatment.
  • Pain and suffering, where permitted under Florida law.

Florida follows a modified comparative negligence system under Florida Statute §768.81, meaning responsibility for a crash may be apportioned among multiple parties based on each person’s percentage of fault.

Whether any legal claims exist will depend on the specific facts established during the investigation.

Investigation Continues

Authorities continue to investigate the crash on Florida’s Turnpike near Mile Marker 83.

Additional information, including the cause of the collision and whether any injuries occurred, may be released as investigators complete their review.

Drive Carefully Through Active Crash Scenes

Traffic incidents can develop quickly and create unexpected hazards for both motorists and emergency responders. Drivers should remain attentive, obey posted traffic controls, reduce speed near crash scenes, and allow extra travel time when traveling on Florida’s busy highways during holiday weekends.

Our thoughts are with everyone involved, and we hope that anyone injured in the collision makes a full recovery.
