What Happened on Florida’s Turnpike?
Initial reports provided few details about how the crash occurred or how many vehicles were involved.
Florida 511 reported that the collision blocked two right northbound lanes before Exit 75. Images from traffic cameras showed a substantial traffic backup and emergency personnel working at the scene.
A semi-truck was visible on the grass shoulder, although authorities had not confirmed what role, if any, the truck played in the collision.
Drivers traveling through the area were advised to expect delays and use caution while approaching the crash scene.
At the time of the initial report, authorities had not released information regarding injuries.
Florida Turnpike Crashes Can Lead to Serious Injuries
Florida’s Turnpike is one of the state’s major high-speed roadways, carrying passenger vehicles, commercial trucks and other traffic throughout South Florida.
Highway crashes can be particularly dangerous because vehicles are often traveling at higher speeds. A sudden lane change, unexpected slowdown or collision ahead can leave drivers with little time to react.
When commercial trucks are involved, the difference in size and weight between a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle can further increase the potential for serious injuries.
However, authorities have not confirmed whether the semi-truck visible near Friday’s crash was involved or what caused the collision.
Determining Liability After a Florida Highway Crash
Determining who is responsible for a highway accident generally requires examining the circumstances immediately before the collision.
Investigators may consider factors such as unsafe lane changes, following too closely, speeding, distracted driving, failure to maintain a lane or other violations of Florida traffic laws.
Evidence can include traffic-camera footage, vehicle damage, physical evidence from the roadway, witness statements and information obtained from the vehicles involved.
When a commercial truck is involved, additional evidence may be relevant, including driver logs, electronic data, maintenance records and information maintained by the trucking company.
The mere presence of a semi-truck at a crash scene does not establish that the truck driver or trucking company was responsible.
What Should You Do After a Florida Turnpike Accident?
People injured in a Florida highway crash should seek appropriate medical care and preserve as much information about the collision as possible.
Photographs of the vehicles, roadway and visible injuries can become important evidence. Drivers should also obtain the crash report when it becomes available and keep records related to medical treatment, missed work and other accident-related expenses.
Because traffic-camera footage and certain other forms of evidence may not be retained indefinitely, investigating a serious accident promptly can also be important.
If another driver’s negligence caused the crash, an injured person may be able to pursue compensation for losses such as medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, and other damages available under Florida law.
