Construction Worker Seriously Injured After Being Run Over by Dump Truck at Dania Beach Jobsite

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A construction worker was critically injured Monday afternoon after being struck and run over by a dump truck at a jobsite in Dania Beach, according to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue.

Fire rescue officials said the incident occurred in the 300 block of Southeast Fifth Street at an active construction site. Battalion Chief Michael Kane, a spokesperson for Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, confirmed that the worker was hit and then run over by a dump truck operating within the work zone.

The worker sustained significant injuries, including serious trauma to the pelvis, and was transported as a trauma alert to Broward Health Medical Center. As of the latest update, officials have not released further information about the worker’s condition.

Sky 10 aerial footage from the scene showed Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies, emergency responders, and construction personnel surrounding the jobsite as investigators began their initial response.

Authorities have not yet said whether the dump truck driver will face citations or criminal charges, and it remains unclear:

  • Whether the truck driver was employed by the same contractor or a subcontractor
  • Whether proper safety procedures and spotters were in place
  • Whether the worker was within a designated work zone or traffic pattern
  • Whether equipment malfunction, poor visibility, or site layout played a role

Construction site incidents involving heavy machinery are typically investigated by multiple agencies, which may include:

  • Local law enforcement
  • The employer and general contractor
  • OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration)
  • Insurance carriers

Construction Site Accidents and Employer Responsibility

Dump trucks and other heavy equipment pose extreme risks on construction sites, especially when safety protocols are not strictly followed. Common contributing factors in these types of incidents include:

  • Lack of proper traffic control or flaggers
  • Inadequate training or supervision
  • Failure to maintain safe distances between workers and vehicles
  • Poor site design or congestion
  • Failure to follow OSHA safety standards

OSHA regulations require employers and contractors to maintain a safe work environment, particularly when large vehicles are operating near workers on foot.

An injured construction worker may have multiple legal avenues depending on the circumstances of the accident:

Workers’ Compensation

Most injured workers are entitled to workers’ compensation benefits, which may cover:

  • Medical treatment
  • A portion of lost wages
  • Disability benefits

However, workers’ compensation does not cover pain and suffering.

Third-Party Injury Claims

If the dump truck driver worked for a different company, or if another contractor, equipment manufacturer, or property owner contributed to unsafe conditions, the injured worker may be able to pursue a third-party personal injury claim in addition to workers’ compensation.

These claims may allow recovery for:

  • Full lost wages and future earning capacity
  • Pain and suffering
  • Permanent disability or disfigurement
  • Long-term medical care

Serious Injuries Can Have Lifelong Consequences

Pelvic and crush injuries from heavy equipment accidents can result in:

  • Multiple surgeries
  • Long-term mobility limitations
  • Chronic pain
  • Inability to return to construction or physical labor

Early legal guidance is often critical to protecting an injured worker’s rights while investigations are still ongoing.

Our Thoughts Are With the Injured Worker

This incident underscores the serious dangers construction workers face daily, especially when heavy machinery is involved. Our thoughts are with the injured worker and his family as he receives medical care.
