Bond Granted for Driver Charged in Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash in Miami
A driver accused of causing a fatal hit-and-run crash in Miami has been granted bond after appearing before a judge, according to court records and law enforcement officials.
Authorities say 41-year-old Deshawn Daniels has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death following an incident that occurred earlier this month in Miami. The case is being investigated by the Miami Police Department.
The crash resulted in the death of a pedestrian and has drawn attention to the dangers of hit-and-run accidents and the legal consequences drivers face when they fail to remain at the scene of a crash.
According to investigators, the crash occurred shortly before 3:30 a.m. on March 13 near the intersection of Northwest 12th Avenue and Northwest 28th Street.
Police say Daniels was driving southbound on Northwest 12th Avenue approaching Northwest 28th Street when the crash occurred.
Investigators determined that the victim, identified as 62-year-old Antonio Sanchez, was crossing the street outside of a marked crosswalk when he was struck by the vehicle.
According to the arrest report, Daniels struck Sanchez with his vehicle and then fled the scene without stopping to provide assistance or contact authorities.
Emergency responders from Miami Fire Rescue transported the victim to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Despite lifesaving efforts, Sanchez later died from his injuries.
Investigation leads to arrest
Investigators used surveillance video from a nearby gas station that captured the crash. The footage reportedly showed an SUV striking the pedestrian and continuing to drive away.
According to police, a break in the investigation came after the incident was reported in the news. An anonymous tipster contacted authorities and informed them about a vehicle matching the description of the SUV involved in the crash at a Miami apartment complex.
When officers arrived at the location, they located a vehicle that matched the one seen in the surveillance footage. Investigators also observed damage to the vehicle consistent with the crash.
Police say Daniels later turned himself in at a Miami police station and admitted that he had been driving the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run.
He was subsequently arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death.
Court appearance and bond
During a court appearance on Sunday, a judge granted Daniels a bond of 65,000 dollars.
Miami-Dade jail records confirm the charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving death, which is considered a serious felony under Florida law.
The criminal case will continue to move through the court system as prosecutors pursue charges.
Legal options and potential liability
Fatal hit-and-run crashes can result in both criminal charges and civil liability. Drivers who leave the scene of a crash involving injury or death violate Florida law and may face significant penalties, including prison time, fines, and license revocation.
In addition to criminal proceedings, families of victims may also have the right to pursue civil claims for wrongful death. These claims allow surviving family members to seek compensation for losses associated with the death of a loved one.
Potential damages in wrongful death cases may include funeral and burial expenses, medical bills related to the incident, loss of financial support, and the emotional loss of companionship and guidance.
Civil investigations may also examine whether additional parties share responsibility, including vehicle owners or other individuals who may have contributed to the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Investigation ongoing
Authorities continue to investigate the fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred near Northwest 12th Avenue and Northwest 28th Street in Miami.
The case serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of leaving the scene of a crash and the importance of drivers fulfilling their legal responsibility to stop and provide assistance after an accident.
