Boca Raton Man Killed After Alleged Hit-and-Run Sparks Seven-Vehicle Crash in Lantana

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A devastating seven-vehicle crash in Lantana claimed the life of a 67-year-old Boca Raton man after investigators say the driver of a Jeep Wrangler fled an initial collision and continued driving at a high rate of speed before causing a chain-reaction crash.

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, the collision involved seven vehicles, trapped multiple victims inside their cars, and required an extensive rescue operation. Investigators believe alcohol or drugs may have been a contributing factor, and the crash remains under active investigation.

The incident highlights the tragic consequences that can result when a driver allegedly flees a collision instead of stopping as required by Florida law.

What We Know About the Crash

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 11:12 a.m. on June 23, 2026, at the intersection of:

  • East Ocean Avenue
  • North Dixie Highway
  • Lantana, Florida

Investigators say the crash began when a Jeep Wrangler collided with a Chevrolet truck.

Rather than stopping, the Jeep allegedly continued southbound on Ocean Avenue at a high rate of speed despite approaching traffic stopped at a red light.

What followed was a catastrophic chain reaction involving seven vehicles.

How the Chain-Reaction Crash Unfolded

According to the sheriff’s crash report, the Jeep first slammed into the rear of a stopped 2023 Mazda.

The force of the impact pushed the Mazda into a stopped 2016 Toyota 4Runner waiting in a left-turn lane.

Investigators say the Jeep then continued forward, striking:

  • A 2006 Honda Civic
  • A 2024 Ford F-350
  • A 2022 Freightliner
  • A 2018 Toyota

Debris from the violent collision also struck a 2026 Toyota Prius.

Photos from the scene showed catastrophic vehicle damage, including a Mazda that had its rear half completely torn away by the force of the collision.

Boca Raton Driver Dies From Injuries

Authorities identified the victim as Jose Bedoya, 67, of Boca Raton.

Bedoya was driving the 2023 Mazda that sustained the most severe impact during the crash.

Emergency responders extricated multiple victims from the wreckage before Bedoya and another seriously injured victim were transported by Palm Beach County Trauma Hawk helicopters to St. Mary’s Medical Center.

Despite emergency medical treatment, Bedoya later died from his injuries.

Two other victims suffered serious injuries and required advanced trauma care.

Firefighters Conducted Complex Rescue Operation

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue reported that two vehicles sustained extensive structural damage.

Three victims became trapped inside their vehicles, requiring approximately ten minutes of heavy extrication using specialized rescue equipment.

Numerous firefighters, paramedics, and law enforcement officers responded to stabilize the victims, secure the scene, and investigate the crash.

The intersection remained closed for approximately seven hours while investigators documented the collision and removed damaged vehicles.

Alcohol or Drugs Suspected

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, investigators believe alcohol or drugs may have contributed to the crash.

At this time, authorities have not announced:

  • Toxicology results
  • Criminal charges
  • The identity of the Jeep driver
  • Whether an arrest has been made

Investigators are continuing to gather evidence as part of the ongoing criminal investigation.

Florida Law Requires Drivers to Stop After a Crash

Florida law imposes strict legal obligations on drivers involved in traffic collisions.

Under Florida Statute §316.061, motorists involved in crashes causing property damage must immediately stop and remain at the scene.

If a crash results in injuries or death, Florida Statutes §§316.027 and 316.062 require drivers to:

  • Stop immediately.
  • Remain at the scene.
  • Render reasonable assistance to injured persons.
  • Provide identifying information to law enforcement and other parties.

Failing to comply with these requirements can lead to serious felony charges, particularly when fatalities occur.

Potential Criminal Charges

If investigators determine the Jeep driver was impaired or intentionally fled the initial collision before causing the fatal chain-reaction crash, prosecutors could pursue several criminal charges depending on the evidence.

Potential charges may include:

  • DUI Manslaughter (Florida Statute §316.193)
  • Vehicular Homicide (Florida Statute §782.071)
  • Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Death
  • Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Injury
  • Reckless Driving (Florida Statute §316.192)

The specific charges will depend on the findings of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, crash reconstruction specialists, and prosecutors.

Potential Wrongful Death Claims

Separate from any criminal proceedings, Jose Bedoya’s surviving family may have legal rights under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes §§768.16–768.26).

If another driver’s negligence, reckless conduct, or impairment caused the crash, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Medical expenses incurred before death
  • Loss of companionship and protection
  • Mental pain and suffering
  • Loss of financial support and services

A wrongful death claim proceeds independently of any criminal prosecution and has a different burden of proof.

Witnesses Describe Heavy Emergency Response

Employees at nearby businesses reported hearing a large number of police cars, ambulances, and fire rescue vehicles responding to the intersection.

Witnesses described a substantial emergency response as firefighters worked to rescue trapped occupants and paramedics treated critically injured victims.

Photos from the scene showed extensive vehicle destruction and a large law enforcement presence throughout the afternoon.

Investigation Continues

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate every aspect of the collision.

Investigators are expected to review:

  • Crash reconstruction evidence
  • Vehicle damage
  • Witness statements
  • Surveillance footage
  • Toxicology testing
  • Cell phone records, if applicable
  • Vehicle event data recorders

Officials have also noted that the intersection’s traffic cameras are not monitored in real time, though investigators are reviewing available evidence to determine exactly how the crash unfolded.

Remembering Jose Bedoya

The loss of Jose Bedoya is a heartbreaking tragedy for his family, friends, and the Boca Raton community.

Our thoughts remain with his loved ones, as well as the other victims who continue recovering from their injuries.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office investigation remains ongoing, and additional information is expected as investigators complete their review.
