Bicyclist Killed in Crash on McCormick Road Near Kernan Boulevard in Jacksonville

An elderly bicyclist was killed Wednesday morning after being struck by a vehicle near McCormick Road and Kernan Boulevard North in Jacksonville, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred around 7 a.m. as the bicyclist was making a left turn to travel west on McCormick Road. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

What Happened in the Fatal Jacksonville Bicycle Crash?

According to JSO Sgt. Robert Hungerford, the bicyclist was wearing a helmet and making a left turn to head westbound on McCormick Road when the collision occurred.

At the same time, another vehicle was traveling west on McCormick Road and struck the bicyclist.

Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department personnel transported the injured man to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities have not publicly identified the bicyclist or released additional information about the driver involved.

McCormick Road near Kernan Boulevard was temporarily affected by the investigation but has since reopened.

Cause of the McCormick Road Bicycle Crash Remains Under Investigation

The information released by JSO describes the movements of the bicyclist and vehicle but does not yet establish exactly why the collision occurred or who had the right-of-way.

Investigators may need to determine precisely where the bicyclist began his turn, the location of the vehicle immediately before impact and whether either party had sufficient time to see and react to the other.

Fourth Bicyclist Killed in Duval County Traffic Crash This Year

JSO said the collision marks the 117th traffic fatality in Duval County in 2026 and the fourth involving a bicyclist.

According to Sgt. Hungerford, six bicyclists had been killed in Duval County crashes by the same point in 2025.

Bicyclists are particularly vulnerable when involved in collisions with motor vehicles because they have little physical protection from the force of an impact. Wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of certain head injuries, but it cannot eliminate the possibility of catastrophic or fatal injuries in a collision with a vehicle.

Police specifically noted that the bicyclist involved in Wednesday’s crash was wearing a helmet.
