Bicyclist Killed in Collision at Stadium Parkway and Wickham Road in Viera
A tragic crash in Brevard County claimed the life of a 77-year-old bicyclist on the morning of July 10, 2025. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the collision occurred around 9:15 a.m. at the intersection of Stadium Parkway and North Wickham Road in Viera.
The bicyclist, whose name has not yet been released, was traveling westbound on Wickham Road when he entered the intersection. At the same time, a 90-year-old man was driving a 2017 Hyundai sedan southbound on Stadium Parkway. According to investigators, the sedan had the green light at the time of the crash. A witness confirmed that the bicyclist entered the intersection against a red traffic signal.
The elderly cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the sedan was not injured and remained at the scene. At this time, no arrests have been made, and the Florida Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Understanding Liability in Florida Bicycle Accidents
Bicycle accidents involving motor vehicles can be devastating, especially for older riders who are more vulnerable to serious injuries or fatalities. In Florida, determining fault in such collisions often comes down to traffic control devices, eyewitness accounts, and other evidence like video surveillance or crash reconstruction.
While the preliminary report suggests the bicyclist may have entered the intersection against a red light, further investigation may uncover additional factors, such as:
- Poor visibility or intersection design
- Inadequate signage or unclear right-of-way markers
- Driver inattention, even if they had the right-of-way
- Timing or malfunction of traffic signals
Even if a bicyclist appears to be at fault, comparative negligence laws in Florida may still allow their surviving family members to recover partial damages if other parties contributed to the accident.
Wrongful Death Claims in Bicycle Accidents
If a bicyclist is killed in a crash, their surviving spouse, children, or estate may have grounds for a wrongful death claim under The Florida Wrongful Death Act. However, the success of such a claim depends on proving that another party’s negligence contributed to the fatality.
In this case, if it is ultimately determined that the driver or another third party (such as the city for roadway design) shares fault, a wrongful death lawsuit may be possible. Damages could include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical expenses prior to death
- Loss of companionship and support
- Mental pain and suffering of surviving family members
