Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A bicyclist died after being struck by an SUV early Saturday morning in Manatee County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred in Bradenton and remains under investigation as troopers work to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal collision.

What We Know About the Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened at approximately 4:30 a.m. on July 12, 2026, along 15th Street East near 61st Avenue East in Bradenton.

Investigators reported that:

  • A male bicyclist was traveling east across 15th Street, south of the intersection with 61st Avenue East.

  • The SUV and the bicyclist collided.
  • The bicyclist suffered critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.
  • Following the initial collision, the SUV overturned and struck a parked vehicle along 15th Street.
  • The SUV driver was not injured.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the bicyclist pending notification of his family.

Investigation Continues

The Florida Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the fatal crash.

Investigators will review numerous factors to determine exactly what occurred, including:

  • The movements of both the bicycle and SUV before the collision.
  • Visibility and lighting conditions at the time of the crash.
  • Vehicle speed.
  • Whether impairment, distraction, or fatigue played a role.
  • Physical evidence from the scene.
  • Witness statements.
  • Any available surveillance or dash camera footage.

No citations or criminal charges have been announced.

Bicycle Accidents Can Have Devastating Consequences

Bicyclists have little protection during a collision with a motor vehicle, making them especially vulnerable to catastrophic or fatal injuries.

Many serious bicycle crashes occur during early morning or nighttime hours when visibility may be reduced. Drivers and cyclists alike should remain alert and exercise caution, particularly in areas where road users may be crossing or sharing the roadway.

Every fatal bicycle crash requires a careful investigation before conclusions are reached regarding how the collision occurred.

When a bicyclist is killed in a traffic collision, surviving family members may have legal rights depending on the facts established during the investigation.

If another party’s negligence contributed to the crash, eligible family members may be able to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes §§768.16–768.26).

Depending on the circumstances, compensation may be available for:

  • Funeral and burial expenses.
  • Medical expenses incurred before death.
  • Loss of financial support and future earnings.
  • Loss of companionship, guidance, and protection.
  • Mental pain and suffering for eligible surviving family members.

In some cases, investigators may also examine whether roadway conditions, inadequate lighting, vehicle defects, or other contributing factors played a role in the collision.

A civil wrongful death claim is separate from any criminal or traffic investigation and focuses on whether negligence contributed to the fatal crash.

Preserving Evidence Is Critical

Determining liability in a fatal bicycle accident often requires a thorough review of available evidence.

Important evidence may include:

  • Florida Highway Patrol crash reports.
  • Crash reconstruction analysis.
  • Surveillance and traffic camera footage.
  • Vehicle event data recorder information.
  • Photographs of the crash scene.
  • Witness statements.
  • Medical records.
  • Measurements documenting vehicle positions and roadway evidence.

Preserving this evidence as early as possible can be essential when evaluating potential legal claims.

Investigation Remains Ongoing

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal bicycle crash in Manatee County.

Additional information, including the identity of the bicyclist and the cause of the collision, may be released as the investigation progresses.

The loss of a loved one is a heartbreaking tragedy. We extend our sincere condolences to the bicyclist’s family, friends, and everyone affected by this devastating incident as they navigate the difficult days ahead.
