Atlanta Man Arrested After Serious Boating Collision Near Haulover Sandbar Injures Multiple People

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

An Atlanta man is facing multiple criminal charges after authorities say a late-night boating collision near the Haulover Sandbar in South Florida left several people seriously injured.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) continues to investigate the incident, which occurred early Saturday morning.

What We Know About the Boating Collision

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the crash occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m. on July 25, 2026, near the Haulover Sandbar in Miami-Dade County.

Investigators reported that the collision involved:

  • A 39-foot Donzi vessel operated by 42-year-old Daniel Lawson of Atlanta.
  • A 20-foot Angler carrying three occupants.

Authorities said all three people aboard the Angler sustained injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials have not publicly disclosed the nature or extent of their injuries.

Following the collision, the Angler sustained catastrophic damage. Witnesses described the vessel as appearing to be “in pieces,” and emergency responders worked to prevent it from sinking by securing it with a cable attached to a nearby pickup truck while recovery efforts continued.

Witness Describes Chaotic Scene

Joseph Levy, who witnessed the aftermath of the collision, recorded video of emergency responders assisting those involved.

Levy told local media he was shocked by what he saw.

According to Levy, boating accidents of this magnitude are uncommon near the Haulover Sandbar.

He described the damaged vessel as severely compromised and noted that while he has previously seen boats capsize in the area, he had never witnessed a collision resulting in this level of destruction.

Criminal Charges Filed

On July 26, authorities arrested Daniel Lawson in connection with the incident.

According to investigators, Lawson has been charged with:

  • Reckless operation of a vessel.
  • Leaving the scene of a boating accident.
  • Tampering with evidence.

These criminal charges are allegations. Mr. Lawson is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

The filing of criminal charges does not determine civil liability or establish fault in any related legal claims.

Investigation Remains Ongoing

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission continues to investigate the collision.

Authorities have not yet released additional information regarding:

  • The speed of either vessel.
  • Whether alcohol or drugs played a role.
  • Lighting and visibility conditions.
  • Whether proper navigation lights were in use.
  • The precise sequence of events leading to the collision.

As part of the investigation, officials may examine:

  • GPS and electronic navigation data.
  • Vessel damage patterns.
  • Witness statements.
  • Cell phone videos.
  • Marine radar information, if available.
  • Operator impairment testing.
  • Mechanical inspections of both vessels.

A complete marine accident reconstruction will help determine exactly how the collision occurred and whether additional contributing factors were involved.

Serious Boating Accidents Can Lead to Both Criminal and Civil Liability

Florida consistently ranks among the states with the highest number of registered recreational boats, making boating safety a significant public concern.

When collisions occur, investigators often evaluate whether factors such as:

  • Excessive speed.
  • Operator inattention.
  • Failure to maintain a proper lookout.
  • Violation of navigation rules.
  • Impairment.
  • Equipment failures.

contributed to the incident.

While criminal charges may arise from a boating accident, injured victims may also have separate civil claims for compensation if another party’s negligence caused or contributed to their injuries.

Criminal proceedings and civil lawsuits are entirely separate legal matters.

Depending on the evidence developed during the investigation, injured victims may be entitled to pursue compensation for:

  • Emergency medical expenses.
  • Hospitalization and surgery.
  • Future medical care and rehabilitation.
  • Lost wages.
  • Reduced earning capacity.
  • Pain and suffering.
  • Permanent disability.
  • Emotional distress.
  • Property damage.
  • Other damages available under Florida law.

Potentially liable parties may include:

  • A negligent vessel operator.
  • The owner of the vessel.
  • A rental company, where applicable.
  • A manufacturer if a mechanical defect contributed to the collision.
  • Other parties whose negligence played a role.

Every boating accident presents unique legal and factual issues, and liability depends on the evidence established during the investigation.

Preserving Evidence Is Critical

Evidence gathered immediately after a marine collision can be essential in determining how the accident occurred.

Important evidence may include:

  • GPS and navigation records.
  • Vessel electronic data.
  • Photographs and videos of the scene.
  • Cell phone recordings.
  • Witness statements.
  • FWC investigative reports.
  • Vessel inspection reports.
  • Marine accident reconstruction findings.

Prompt preservation of this evidence can help investigators accurately reconstruct the collision and identify all contributing factors.

Investigation Continues

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission continues to investigate the boating collision near the Haulover Sandbar.

Additional information regarding the victims’ conditions, the cause of the crash, and any additional criminal charges may be released as investigators complete their review.

Wishing the Victims a Full Recovery

Serious boating accidents can have life-changing consequences for victims and their families. We hope those injured in this collision make a full recovery and that the ongoing investigation provides a clear understanding of the events that led to this devastating incident.
