92-Year-Old Man Dies After Three-Vehicle Crash in Palm Beach Gardens
A 92-year-old man died following a three-vehicle crash Sunday in Palm Beach Gardens, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash occurred along Alternate A1A near Atlantic Road, where investigators say a left-turn collision triggered a chain-reaction crash involving three vehicles.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office crash report, a 2017 Toyota RAV4 was traveling southbound in the left-turn lane on Alternate A1A at Atlantic Road.
At the same time:
- A 2014 Dodge Charger was traveling northbound in the inside lane of Alternate A1A approaching the intersection
- A 2016 Kia Soul was traveling behind the Dodge Charger
Investigators say the Toyota attempted to make a left turn across northbound traffic, entering the path of the Dodge Charger.
The Dodge Charger then struck the passenger side of the Toyota, causing a violent impact.
Following the initial collision:
- The Toyota RAV4 was redirected northeast and came to rest on a sidewalk
- The Kia Soul attempted to avoid the crash but struck the passenger side of the Dodge Charger
- The Dodge Charger veered northeast and also came to rest on the sidewalk
The Kia Soul ultimately stopped with the front of the vehicle against the passenger side of the Dodge Charger.
Emergency responders transported the driver of the Toyota, a 92-year-old woman, and her passenger, Hans Homburger, also 92, to Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center for treatment.
Authorities say Homburger later died from his injuries.
Information about the condition of the driver and the occupants of the other vehicles has not been fully released.
Left-Turn Collisions Are Common Causes of Serious Crashes
Crashes involving left-turning vehicles are among the most common types of intersection collisions.
These accidents often occur when a driver misjudges the speed or distance of oncoming traffic while attempting to turn across lanes.
Factors that frequently contribute to left-turn crashes include:
- Failure to yield the right of way
- Limited visibility at intersections
- Driver distraction
- Speed of approaching vehicles
- Poor lighting or roadway design
Because turning vehicles often expose the side of the vehicle to oncoming traffic, these crashes can lead to severe injuries for occupants.
Potential Legal Liability in Intersection Crashes
Determining liability in multi-vehicle intersection crashes can be complex and often requires a detailed investigation.
Authorities may analyze several types of evidence, including:
- Traffic signal timing and intersection design
- Vehicle speeds and impact points
- Witness statements and surveillance footage
- Crash reconstruction analysis
- Driver distraction or impairment
In cases where negligence contributes to a fatal crash, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida law.
Such claims may seek compensation for damages including:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical bills related to the crash
- Loss of companionship and emotional suffering
- Loss of financial support
