81-Year-Old Man Killed in I-95 Crash Near Viera, Passenger Seriously Injured

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A tragic early morning crash on Interstate 95 near Viera, Florida left an 81-year-old man dead and another passenger seriously injured, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash caused major delays before lanes were eventually reopened.

What We Know About the Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 6:00 a.m. on April 28, 2026, in the northbound lanes of I-95 near the Wickham Road exit (mile marker 191).

A 75-year-old female passenger sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment.

The crash led to the closure of northbound lanes for several hours, causing significant traffic delays during the morning commute. All lanes were reopened by approximately 9:00 a.m.

Authorities have not yet released additional details regarding how the crash occurred.

The Dangers of Highway Crashes

Crashes on major highways like I-95 can be especially severe due to higher speeds and traffic volume.

Common risks include:

  • High-speed impacts
  • Limited reaction time
  • Chain-reaction collisions
  • Increased severity of injuries

Even a single collision can lead to significant traffic disruptions and serious consequences.

When a crash results in death and serious injuries, a thorough investigation is necessary to determine fault and contributing factors.

Investigators may examine:

  • Driver behavior and possible negligence
  • Speed and traffic conditions
  • Vehicle positioning and impact points
  • Roadway conditions and visibility

Liability may depend on which driver failed to operate their vehicle safely.

Wrongful Death and Injury Claims Under Florida Law

Under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, Florida Statutes §§ 768.16–768.26, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue compensation when negligence contributes to a fatal crash.

Injury victims may also seek compensation for:

  • Medical expenses
  • Lost wages
  • Pain and suffering
  • Long-term care needs

These claims can help families recover both financially and emotionally after a serious accident.

Investigation Ongoing

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash and will release further details as they become available.
