78-Year-Old Man Killed in Fiery Crash at Tallahassee McDonald’s Parking Lot, FHP Says

A 78-year-old Tallahassee man was killed Saturday morning after losing control of a modified street-legal race car in a McDonald’s parking lot on Mahan Drive, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Investigators say the vehicle struck a curb before a nitrous oxide tank ruptured and ignited, causing the car to become fully engulfed in flames. The crash remains under investigation.

What We Know About the Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 11:49 a.m. on July 4, 2026, at the McDonald’s located at 3631 Mahan Drive in Tallahassee.

Troopers reported that:

• A 78-year-old Tallahassee man was driving a modified, street-legal race car westbound through the restaurant parking lot.
• While accelerating through a left-hand curve, the driver lost control of the vehicle.
• The vehicle struck a concrete curb.
• The impact caused a nitrous oxide tank inside the vehicle to rupture and ignite.
• The vehicle then collided with several trees, a retaining wall, and a guardrail before coming to a stop.

By the time emergency crews arrived, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. The driver, who was the only occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Leon County EMS, Leon County Fire Rescue, and the Leon County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Florida Highway Patrol at the scene.

Nitrous Oxide Tank Ignited Following Impact

According to investigators, the initial collision with the concrete curb caused the vehicle’s nitrous oxide tank to tear open and ignite.
