70-Year-Old Woman Critically Injured in Escambia County Crash on U.S. 29

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A 70-year-old Pensacola woman is in critical condition following a two-vehicle crash Friday afternoon in Escambia County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

Troopers say the accident occurred on October 24 at the intersection of U.S. Highway 29 (State Road 95) and State Road 97.

According to investigators, a red Chevy SUV was traveling north in the left turn lane on U.S. 29 when the driver failed to yield to oncoming traffic and attempted a left turn into the intersection. The vehicle’s right side was struck by the front of a black Ford SUV traveling south in the inside lane.

The 70-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the red Chevy SUV, sustained critical injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Her name has not been released. The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.

Left-turn collisions are one of the most frequent causes of serious injuries at intersections. In Florida, these crashes often occur when a driver misjudges the speed of oncoming traffic or fails to yield the right of way — a violation of Florida Statute §316.122, which requires turning drivers to yield until it is safe to proceed.

For older drivers and passengers, the force of such impacts can be devastating, often resulting in:

  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBI)
  • Broken ribs and internal bleeding
  • Spinal or neck injuries
  • Long-term mobility and recovery challenges

Because left-turn crashes typically involve a side impact, the struck vehicle’s occupants face higher risk of severe injuries compared to front or rear-end collisions.

In most left-turn crashes, the turning driver is presumed at fault, unless evidence shows that the other motorist was speeding, running a red light, or driving recklessly.

A proper investigation often includes:

  • Reviewing intersection surveillance or dashcam footage
  • Examining vehicle damage patterns and skid marks
  • Interviewing witnesses and first responders
  • Analyzing crash reconstruction data

If negligence is established, injured victims may pursue a personal injury claim to recover damages under Florida law.

Compensation for Accident Victims in Florida

Victims of severe traffic accidents may be entitled to compensation for:

  • Hospital and rehabilitation costs
  • Future medical care and physical therapy
  • Pain and suffering
  • Lost income or earning potential
  • Home care or mobility assistance

Under Florida’s comparative negligence statute (§768.81), even if multiple drivers share partial fault, injured victims can still recover compensation proportional to the other driver’s degree of responsibility.
