5-Year-Old Boy Killed After Being Struck by Pickup Truck While Riding Bicycle in Miami-Dade County

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded Friday evening in southwest Miami-Dade County when a 5-year-old boy was struck and killed by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.

The fatal crash occurred near Miami Motocross Park, where investigators say the young child rode into the roadway between parked vehicles. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

What We Know About the Crash

According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred on the evening of June 27, 2026, near the intersection of Southwest 166th Street and Southwest 177th Avenue, close to Miami Motocross Park.

Investigators reported that:

  • The 5-year-old boy was riding a bicycle.
  • The child entered the roadway between parked vehicles.
  • A pickup truck struck the child.
  • The boy suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said the pickup truck driver remained at the scene and is fully cooperating with investigators.

At this time, law enforcement has not announced whether any criminal charges or traffic citations will be issued.

Investigation Ongoing

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the fatal collision.

Investigators will likely examine several factors, including:

  • Vehicle speed.
  • Driver visibility.
  • The child’s path of travel.
  • Roadway design and sightlines.
  • Lighting conditions.
  • Physical evidence from the scene.
  • Witness statements.
  • Surveillance or nearby camera footage, if available.

Because the investigation is still in its early stages, authorities have not determined whether the crash could have been prevented or whether any traffic laws were violated.

Child Bicycle Accidents Can Present Unique Challenges

Collisions involving young children often occur quickly and unexpectedly, particularly in residential or recreational areas where children may enter the roadway from between parked vehicles or other visual obstructions.

Drivers traveling in areas where children are likely to be present should exercise heightened caution by:

  • Driving below posted speed limits when appropriate.
  • Watching carefully for pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Remaining alert near parks, neighborhoods, and recreational facilities.
  • Being prepared to stop suddenly.

Likewise, parents and caregivers can help reduce risk by ensuring children ride in safe areas away from moving traffic whenever possible and by providing close supervision for younger riders.

Florida Laws That May Apply

Florida law requires motorists to exercise due care to avoid colliding with pedestrians and bicyclists.

Florida Statute §316.130 requires drivers to exercise proper care to avoid striking pedestrians and to take reasonable precautions when children are present near roadways.

Additionally, Florida Statute §316.2065 recognizes bicyclists as lawful roadway users and establishes rules governing the operation of bicycles on Florida roads.

Whether any statute was violated in this case will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.

Whenever a child is fatally injured in a motor vehicle collision, investigators carefully evaluate whether negligence by any party contributed to the incident.

Potential factors may include:

  • Excessive speed.
  • Distracted driving.
  • Failure to maintain a proper lookout.
  • Roadway visibility.
  • Vehicle positioning.
  • Environmental conditions.

If evidence ultimately establishes that another party’s negligence contributed to the child’s death, surviving family members may have legal rights under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes §§768.16–768.26).

Potential compensation in a wrongful death claim may include:

  • Funeral and burial expenses.
  • Medical expenses incurred before death.
  • Mental pain and suffering for qualifying surviving family members.
  • Loss of companionship and support.

A wrongful death claim is a civil matter and is separate from any criminal investigation.

Investigation Continues

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the fatal bicycle crash.

Authorities are expected to determine:

  • Whether speed or distraction played a role.
  • Whether any traffic laws were violated.
  • Whether citations or criminal charges are appropriate.

Additional information may be released as investigators complete their review.

The death of a young child is an unimaginable tragedy that leaves an entire family and community grieving.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the boy’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. We also recognize the emotional impact such incidents have on first responders and everyone involved.

The investigation remains ongoing.
