5-Year-Old Boy Injured After E-Bike Riders Crash Into Him on Daytona Beach

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

Authorities in Volusia County are searching for two e-bike riders after a crash on a Daytona Beach shoreline left a young child injured over the weekend.

The incident has raised concerns about the growing presence of motorized bicycles on crowded Florida beaches and the risks they can pose to pedestrians — especially children.

According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred Saturday afternoon on the beach north of Sun Splash Park in Daytona Beach.

Investigators said a 5-year-old boy was walking toward the water to fill a beach bucket when he was struck by e-bike riders traveling along the shoreline.

Witnesses told deputies the riders were a teenage boy and teenage girl operating the electric bicycle.

Authorities say the e-bike riders stopped briefly after the collision, apologized to the child and those nearby, and then left the scene without providing identifying information.

The boy was transported to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries, officials confirmed.

Deputies are now asking for the public’s help in identifying the riders involved.

Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office at 386-239-6414.

Safety Concerns About E-Bikes on Florida Beaches

Electric bicycles and other motorized devices have become increasingly popular across Florida, including in beachfront areas. However, when operated in crowded spaces, they can pose serious risks to pedestrians.

Beachgoers — particularly children — may not expect fast-moving e-bikes in areas where people are walking, playing, or near the shoreline.

Common safety concerns include:

  • Riders traveling at excessive speeds
  • Limited visibility in crowded beach areas
  • Lack of designated riding zones
  • Failure to stop after collisions or injuries

Local ordinances often regulate where motorized devices may be used, but enforcement can vary by jurisdiction.

Under Florida law, anyone involved in a crash that results in injury is required to stop and provide reasonable assistance and identifying information.

Even in incidents involving bicycles or e-bikes, riders can be held legally responsible if:

  • They operate recklessly or negligently
  • They fail to remain at the scene of an injury crash
  • Their actions result in harm to a pedestrian

When a child is injured, potential liability may extend to the riders and, in some cases, their parents or guardians depending on the circumstances.

Investigation Ongoing

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident and is working to identify the e-bike riders involved.

While the child’s injuries were reported as minor, the crash serves as a reminder of the importance of operating e-bikes and other motorized devices responsibly — especially in crowded public areas where young children and families are present.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office as the investigation remains active.
