35-Year-Old Woman Killed in Wrong-Way Crash on I-10 in Jacksonville
A devastating wrong-way crash on Interstate 10 in Jacksonville, Florida claimed the life of a 35-year-old woman early Monday morning after a pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction collided with her SUV head-on, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash caused major highway closures and significant delays during the morning commute.
What We Know About the Crash
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred just after 2:00 a.m. on April 28, 2026, in the eastbound lanes of I-10 near Chaffee Road.
Troopers say a 35-year-old woman was traveling eastbound in the center lane when a pickup truck, driven by a 27-year-old man, was traveling westbound in the wrong direction.
The pickup truck struck the woman’s SUV head-on.
Following the collision, the truck overturned and landed on its roof. Authorities say the driver of the pickup exited the vehicle and attempted to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended by responding officers.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The pickup truck driver suffered minor injuries.
Both drivers were reportedly wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Traffic Impact and Road Closures
The crash resulted in the full closure of eastbound I-10 for several hours.
Drivers were diverted onto Chaffee Road, with traffic rerouted through Crystal Springs Road and Hammond Boulevard before re-entering the interstate.
The closure caused significant delays, with backups lasting well into the morning. All lanes were eventually reopened by late morning.
The Dangers of Wrong-Way Driving
Wrong-way crashes are among the most dangerous types of collisions due to the high speeds and direct impact involved.
Common causes include:
- Impaired driving (alcohol or drugs)
- Driver confusion or disorientation
- Entering the highway from the wrong ramp
- Fatigue or distraction
These crashes often result in severe or fatal injuries because both vehicles are traveling toward each other at high speeds.
Legal Consequences of Fleeing the Scene
Leaving the scene of a crash—especially one involving serious injury or death—is a serious criminal offense in Florida.
Potential consequences may include:
- Felony charges
- Significant prison time
- Driver’s license revocation
- Additional penalties if impairment is involved
Attempting to flee after a crash can significantly worsen legal outcomes.
Wrongful Death Claims Under Florida Law
Under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, Florida Statutes §§ 768.16–768.26, families who lose a loved one in a crash caused by negligence may be entitled to pursue compensation.
Damages may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Loss of financial support
- Loss of companionship
- Emotional pain and suffering
These claims can help families seek justice and financial recovery.
Investigation Ongoing
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash and determine all contributing factors.
