A 27-year-old woman was killed early Wednesday morning in a wrong-way crash in Volusia County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The fatal collision occurred along Kepler Avenue just south of Mimosa Lane near DeLand.
Authorities say the crash involved a vehicle traveling the wrong direction in oncoming traffic.
According to troopers, a Ford vehicle was traveling northbound in the southbound lane of Kepler Avenue when it collided head-on with a Honda traveling southbound.
Investigators say the front of the Ford struck the front of the Honda, causing a devastating impact.
Emergency responders arrived at the crash scene shortly afterward.
The 27-year-old woman driving the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
Her identity has not yet been released pending notification of family members.
Authorities said the driver of the Ford, a 33-year-old man from Oviedo, survived the crash.
He was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center with minor injuries, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Investigators have not yet announced what caused the driver to travel in the wrong lane.
The crash remains under investigation.
The crash caused significant traffic disruptions in the DeLand area.
Officials closed a section of Kepler Avenue while investigators processed the scene and cleared debris from the roadway.
Drivers were advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes, including:
- International Speedway Boulevard
- Minnesota Avenue
The roadway has since reopened after the investigation at the scene was completed.
Why Wrong-Way Crashes Are So Dangerous
Wrong-way collisions are among the most deadly types of crashes because they often result in high-speed head-on impacts.
Common causes of wrong-way accidents include:
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Driver confusion or disorientation
- Entering a roadway from the wrong direction
- Fatigue or distraction
- Poor roadway lighting or signage
These crashes frequently occur during late-night or early-morning hours, when visibility is lower and impaired driving incidents are more common.
Legal Options After Fatal Wrong-Way Crashes
When a driver’s negligence causes a fatal crash, surviving family members may be able to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida law.
These claims may allow families to recover compensation for:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical costs related to the crash
- Loss of financial support
- Loss of companionship and emotional suffering
Determining liability often requires a detailed investigation into the cause of the crash.
