25-Year-Old Kissimmee Man Killed After Crashing Into Parked Construction Truck on SR-417

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A 25-year-old Kissimmee man was killed early Friday morning after his vehicle crashed into a parked construction truck in an active work zone on State Road 417 in Seminole County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The fatal crash occurred in the northbound lanes of SR-417 and temporarily shut down the highway for several hours while investigators processed the scene.

What We Know About the Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened at approximately 12:45 a.m. on July 10, 2026, on northbound State Road 417 just north of Aloma Avenue (State Road 426).

Investigators reported that:

  • A 25-year-old Kissimmee man was driving a 2022 Acura ILX northbound in the outside lane.
  • The Acura drifted into an active construction zone.
  • The vehicle struck the rear of a parked construction drill truck.
  • The construction truck was parked within a closed lane inside the work zone.
  • No workers or occupants were inside the construction vehicle at the time of the crash.

The Acura driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Highway Closed During Investigation

Following the collision, all northbound lanes of State Road 417 at Aloma Avenue were closed for nearly five hours.

The roadway reopened shortly after 5:30 a.m. once investigators completed their work and crews cleared the crash scene.

Investigation Continues

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating what caused the Acura to enter the construction zone.

Investigators will likely examine several factors, including:

  • Driver distraction.
  • Fatigue or drowsy driving.
  • Vehicle speed.
  • Possible impairment.
  • Work zone traffic control devices and signage.
  • Vehicle mechanical condition.
  • Physical evidence from the scene.

Authorities have not announced whether any contributing factors have been identified.

Work Zones Require Extra Caution

Construction zones often present changing traffic patterns, narrowed lanes, and stationary construction equipment that require drivers to remain especially alert.

Motorists traveling through active work zones should:

  • Reduce speed.
  • Stay within marked travel lanes.
  • Avoid distractions.
  • Watch for lane closures and warning signs.
  • Maintain a safe following distance.

Remaining attentive in construction areas can help prevent serious and fatal crashes.

Florida Laws That May Apply

Because the investigation remains ongoing, no determination of fault has been made.

Depending on the evidence, investigators may evaluate compliance with Florida traffic laws, including:

  • Florida Statute §316.183, requiring motorists to operate at a speed that is reasonable and prudent for existing conditions.
  • Florida Statute §316.1925, governing careless driving.
  • Florida’s Move Over and work zone safety laws designed to protect highway workers and motorists traveling through construction areas.

Any findings regarding contributing factors will depend on the outcome of the investigation.

Although this appears to be a single-vehicle crash, investigators will determine whether any outside factors contributed to the collision, including roadway conditions, work zone setup, visibility, or mechanical failure.

If evidence establishes that negligence by another party or unsafe work zone conditions contributed to the crash, surviving family members may have legal rights under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes §§768.16–768.26).

Whether any civil claim exists will depend on the facts established during the investigation.

Investigation Remains Ongoing

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal crash on State Road 417 in Seminole County.

Additional information regarding the cause of the collision may be released as investigators complete their review.
