24-Year-Old Driver Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash on Jacksonville’s Northside
A 24-year-old man was killed early Tuesday morning in a hit-and-run crash on Jacksonville’s Northside after another driver turned into his path and fled the scene on foot, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO).
Authorities say the collision occurred around 5:34 a.m. at the intersection of Gold Star Family Parkway and Pecan Park Road.
Investigators reported that the victim was driving a Chevy S10 eastbound on Gold Star Family Parkway when a Chevy Silverado traveling westbound attempted to turn across traffic. The Silverado turned directly into the path of the smaller truck, causing a violent impact.
The 24-year-old driver of the S10 suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the driver of the Silverado initially got out of his vehicle and attempted to assist the victim — but then fled on foot, leaving his truck behind.
Authorities are now searching for the hit-and-run driver and are urging anyone with information or surveillance footage from the area to contact JSO or Crime Stoppers.
Under Florida Statute §316.027, leaving the scene of a crash involving death is a first-degree felony, punishable by up to 30 years in prison and a mandatory minimum four-year sentence. Drivers involved in any collision resulting in injury or death are required by law to:
- Stop immediately and remain at the scene,
- Render reasonable assistance to injured individuals, and
- Contact law enforcement and emergency responders.
When a driver flees, not only are they breaking the law — they are also denying victims the chance to receive potentially life-saving help.
Even if a driver flees, the victim’s family may still have legal recourse. Civil investigations in hit-and-run cases often include:
- Vehicle identification through license plate or VIN number
- Surveillance footage from nearby traffic or business cameras
- Eyewitness testimony
- Forensic analysis of debris and vehicle damage
Once identified, the at-fault driver — and potentially their insurance carrier — may be held liable for damages under the Florida Wrongful Death Act (§§768.16–768.26).
If the driver is uninsured or cannot be located, the victim’s family may be able to pursue compensation through their own uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (UM/UIM) policy.
Legal Options for Families After a Fatal Hit-and-Run
Families of fatal crash victims may seek compensation for:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Loss of financial support and future income
- Emotional pain and suffering
- Loss of companionship or parental guidance
- Medical bills related to emergency treatment
Because hit-and-run investigations can take time, it’s important to contact a wrongful death attorney immediately to ensure evidence is preserved and insurance claims are properly handled.
