23-Year-Old Motorcyclist Killed in Crash on Philips Highway in Jacksonville

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A 23-year-old motorcyclist died after a collision with an SUV on Philips Highway in Jacksonville, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred in the Bartram Springs area and led to the closure of all northbound lanes of Philips Highway while investigators worked at the scene. Authorities say the collision happened when an SUV turned into the path of the motorcycle.

The crash remains under investigation.

What We Know About the Jacksonville Motorcycle Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the collision occurred on Philips Highway near Race Track Road.

Investigators reported that:

  • A motorcycle was traveling northbound on Philips Highway.
  • An SUV driven by an 81-year-old woman was attempting a left turn.
  • The SUV entered the path of the oncoming motorcycle.
  • The motorcycle struck the left side of the SUV.

Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene and provided medical assistance to the rider.

Rider Succumbs to Injuries

Authorities said the 23-year-old motorcyclist suffered life-threatening injuries in the collision.

The rider was transported to HCA Memorial Hospital for treatment but later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The SUV driver sustained minor injuries.

The identities of those involved have not been publicly released.

Traffic Disruptions Followed the Crash

Following the collision:

  • Northbound lanes of Philips Highway were closed.
  • Traffic was diverted around the crash scene.
  • Investigators remained on scene for several hours.

Road closures are common following fatal crashes as authorities collect evidence and document roadway conditions.

Left-Turn Motorcycle Crashes Are Among the Most Common Fatal Collisions

Traffic safety studies have consistently found that left-turn crashes are one of the leading causes of fatal motorcycle accidents.

These collisions often occur when:

  • Drivers misjudge the speed of an approaching motorcycle.
  • Drivers fail to see the motorcycle altogether.
  • Traffic conditions create visibility challenges.
  • Drivers attempt turns through gaps in traffic.

Because motorcycles are smaller than passenger vehicles, they can sometimes be overlooked even when they are plainly visible.

Motorcyclists Face Greater Risks on the Road

Unlike occupants of passenger vehicles, motorcycle riders have very little protection during a collision.

Even when wearing proper safety gear, riders can suffer:

  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Internal injuries
  • Multiple fractures
  • Fatal trauma

The severity of injuries often increases when crashes occur at higher roadway speeds.

Investigation Ongoing

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal crash.

Investigators may review:

  • Vehicle damage
  • Witness statements
  • Traffic signal information
  • Roadway evidence
  • Surveillance or traffic camera footage

A complete investigation will help determine all contributing factors.

Remembering a Young Life Lost
