22-Year-Old Man Dies After Turning in Front of Semi-Truck Near Lake Wales

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A 22-year-old man from Brevard County died following a serious crash involving a semi-truck near Lake Wales in Polk County, according to investigators.

The collision occurred around 11:30 a.m. on March 7 at the intersection of State Road 60 and County Road 630, east of Lake Wales.

Authorities from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the fatal incident.

According to preliminary findings, Christopher Joseph Morante II, 22, of Barefoot Bay, was driving a 2012 Ford Fusion when the crash occurred.

Investigators say Morante turned right from County Road 630 onto State Road 60 heading east. Shortly after entering the roadway, he attempted to make a U-turn to travel westbound on SR-60.

During the maneuver, Morante’s vehicle crossed into the path of an eastbound Peterbilt semi-truck.

The semi-truck struck the Ford Fusion, causing catastrophic damage to the vehicle.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and had to extricate Morante from the wreckage of his vehicle due to the severity of the crash.

He suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.

Despite emergency medical treatment, Morante died shortly after arriving at the hospital, according to investigators.

The driver of the semi-truck was not injured in the crash.

The collision caused significant traffic disruption along State Road 60.

Authorities temporarily closed the roadway in both directions while deputies and emergency crews responded and investigated the scene.

Traffic was later redirected into one lane in each direction before the roadway was fully reopened approximately four hours later.

Why Semi-Truck Crashes Are So Dangerous

Collisions involving commercial tractor-trailers often lead to severe injuries or fatalities due to the massive size and weight difference between large trucks and passenger vehicles.

A fully loaded semi-truck can weigh up to 80,000 pounds, making it much harder to slow down or stop quickly.

Common factors in serious truck crashes include:

  • Vehicles turning or pulling out in front of oncoming trucks
  • Limited stopping distance for large commercial vehicles
  • Blind spots around tractor-trailers
  • Improper turns or U-turns at busy intersections
  • Speed or visibility issues on highways

Even when a passenger vehicle driver initiates a maneuver, investigators often examine multiple factors to determine whether other issues contributed to the crash.

Fatal crashes involving semi-trucks may raise complex legal questions regarding liability.

Depending on the circumstances, responsible parties could include:

  • The truck driver
  • The trucking company employing the driver
  • Vehicle manufacturers in cases involving mechanical failure
  • Maintenance companies responsible for truck inspections
  • Government entities responsible for roadway design or traffic control

Truck accident investigations often involve reviewing driver logs, dash cameras, maintenance records, and accident reconstruction reports to determine whether negligence played a role.

When a crash results in a fatality, surviving family members may be able to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida law if negligence contributed to the collision.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash involving the semi-truck near Lake Wales.
