Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A 22-year-old man was killed early Sunday morning after a shooting in the parking lot of a bar in Brevard County, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 2:30 a.m. to 1505 West King Street in Cocoa, the location of Ace’s Bar, after receiving reports of gunfire.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found J’Lyn Gordon, 22, of Vero Beach, suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds in the parking lot.

Emergency responders transported Gordon to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities confirmed the shooting occurred outside the bar in the parking lot area.

As of now, no arrests have been made. The investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Agent Neil Lee of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit at (321) 633-8413. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through CRIMELINE at 1-800-423-TIPS (8477).

Violence in Bar and Nightlife Parking Lots

Many violent incidents connected to bars and nightclubs occur in parking lots after patrons leave the venue.

Common contributing factors include:

  • Alcohol-related disputes
  • Altercations between patrons
  • Lack of security presence
  • Poor lighting in parking areas
  • Insufficient surveillance or security cameras

When incidents occur on commercial property, investigators often review whether adequate safety measures were in place.

Potential Liability for Bars and Property Owners

Under Florida law, bars, nightclubs, and other businesses that invite the public onto their property have a duty to maintain reasonably safe premises.

In certain circumstances, property owners or operators may be held responsible under negligent security laws if preventable violence occurs on their property.

Potential negligent security issues may include:

  • Lack of trained security personnel
  • Failure to monitor or manage intoxicated patrons
  • Inadequate lighting in parking lots
  • Broken or missing surveillance cameras
  • Failure to respond to prior violent incidents

If a business knew or should have known that criminal activity was likely to occur and failed to take reasonable precautions, it may face civil liability.

When a fatal shooting occurs on commercial property, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim against responsible parties if negligence contributed to the incident.

Compensation in these cases may include:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Loss of financial support
  • Loss of companionship and guidance
  • Emotional pain and suffering

Investigating negligent security claims often involves reviewing police reports, prior incident history at the location, surveillance footage, and security procedures.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the fatal shooting at Ace’s Bar in Cocoa.
