Common contributing factors include:
- Alcohol-related disputes
- Altercations between patrons
- Lack of security presence
- Poor lighting in parking areas
- Insufficient surveillance or security cameras
When incidents occur on commercial property, investigators often review whether adequate safety measures were in place.
Potential Liability for Bars and Property Owners

In certain circumstances, property owners or operators may be held responsible under negligent security laws if preventable violence occurs on their property.
Potential negligent security issues may include:
- Lack of trained security personnel
- Failure to monitor or manage intoxicated patrons
- Inadequate lighting in parking lots
- Broken or missing surveillance cameras
- Failure to respond to prior violent incidents
If a business knew or should have known that criminal activity was likely to occur and failed to take reasonable precautions, it may face civil liability.

Compensation in these cases may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Loss of financial support
- Loss of companionship and guidance
- Emotional pain and suffering
Investigating negligent security claims often involves reviewing police reports, prior incident history at the location, surveillance footage, and security procedures.
