21-Year-Old Motorcyclist Killed in Collision With SUV on State Road A1A in St. Johns County

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A 21-year-old motorcyclist from Milwaukee was killed Thursday night in a crash involving an SUV on State Road A1A in St. Johns County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

Troopers said the crash occurred at approximately 10:15 p.m. as the motorcyclist was traveling northbound on A1A near Sawgrass Village Drive. At the same time, a Subaru SUV traveling southbound attempted to make a left turn into The Fountains of Ponte Vedra condominium complex, crossing directly into the motorcycle’s path.

According to the FHP crash report, the motorcycle struck the middle right side of the SUV.

The motorcyclist, who was wearing a helmet, was transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The SUV was driven by a 64-year-old woman, with a 70-year-old male passenger in the vehicle. Troopers reported that both occupants were wearing seat belts and were not injured in the crash.

Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. No additional details regarding speed, visibility, or potential contributing factors have been released at this time.

Collisions involving vehicles turning left in front of oncoming motorcycles are among the most common and dangerous crash scenarios for riders. Motorcycles are often harder to perceive at night, and even experienced drivers may misjudge distance or speed when making left-hand turns across traffic.

Despite protective gear such as helmets, motorcyclists remain especially vulnerable due to limited physical protection in high-impact crashes.

When a motorcyclist is killed in a traffic collision, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida law, depending on the facts of the case.

A thorough investigation may examine factors such as:

  • Whether the turning vehicle failed to yield the right of way
  • Roadway lighting and visibility conditions
  • Speed and vehicle data from both vehicles
  • Intersection or driveway design
  • Available insurance coverage

Even when criminal charges are not immediately filed, civil liability may still exist.

This tragic crash underscores the dangers motorcyclists face on Florida roadways, particularly during nighttime travel. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones as they navigate this devastating loss.

Anyone affected by a fatal motorcycle accident may benefit from speaking with a knowledgeable Florida wrongful death attorney to better understand their legal options and next steps.
