20-Year-Old Pedestrian Killed While Crossing I-95 in Hollywood, FHP Says
A 20-year-old Davie man died after he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross Interstate 95 in Hollywood early Friday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The fatal collision occurred in the northbound Express Lanes near West Pembroke Road while rain was falling and the interstate was wet.
What Happened on I-95 Near West Pembroke Road?
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash was reported at approximately 4:20 a.m. on August 7, 2026.
Troopers said the 20-year-old pedestrian jumped from the center concrete barrier separating the northbound and southbound sides of I-95 and began crossing the northbound lanes.
As he attempted to cross the interstate, he entered the path of a Honda Civic traveling in the right lane of the northbound Express Lanes, north of West Pembroke Road.
The Honda struck the pedestrian.
Authorities have not explained why the man was attempting to cross I-95.
Pedestrian Later Died at Memorial Regional Hospital
The pedestrian suffered critical injuries and was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital.
Despite efforts to save him, authorities said he was pronounced dead at approximately 7:27 a.m.
His identity had not been publicly released at the time of the report.
After the collision, the Honda driver moved from the Express Lanes into the general-purpose lanes and stopped in the left lane.
Authorities have not announced whether the driver will face any citations or charges.
Rain and Wet Road Conditions Reported at Time of Crash
FHP reported that it was raining when the collision occurred and that the roadway was wet.
Those conditions could be relevant to the investigation because rain can reduce visibility and increase the distance a vehicle needs to stop.
Investigators may examine whether the Honda driver had sufficient time to see the pedestrian and react once he entered the travel lane.
However, FHP has not alleged that the Honda driver was speeding, distracted, impaired, or otherwise negligent.
Why Was the Pedestrian Crossing I-95?
One of the major unanswered questions is why the 20-year-old man was attempting to cross an active interstate before dawn.
Authorities had not provided an explanation as of the initial report.
Determining what happened before the pedestrian reached the center barrier could help investigators develop a more complete understanding of the incident.
Investigators may look for witnesses, surveillance footage, nearby disabled vehicles, or other evidence that could explain how and why he came to be on the interstate.
Pedestrian Crashes on Interstates Can Be Difficult to Avoid
Pedestrian collisions on limited-access highways present unusual circumstances.
Drivers traveling on an interstate generally do not expect someone to suddenly enter their lane on foot. At highway speeds, motorists also have significantly less time to recognize a pedestrian and take evasive action.
In this case, the collision happened at approximately 4:20 a.m. while it was raining and the roadway was wet.
Those circumstances will likely be considered alongside other evidence as FHP determines exactly how the crash occurred.
How Is Liability Determined in a Florida Pedestrian Accident?
The fact that a vehicle strikes a pedestrian does not automatically mean the driver is legally responsible.
A complete investigation may consider the actions of both the pedestrian and driver.
Relevant factors can include:
- Where the pedestrian entered the roadway.
- Whether the driver had an opportunity to see the pedestrian.
- Vehicle speed.
- Lighting and visibility.
- Weather and roadway conditions.
- Braking or evasive maneuvers.
- Driver distraction or impairment.
- The pedestrian’s actions immediately before impact.
Florida follows a modified comparative negligence system. This means responsibility for an accident may potentially be divided among multiple parties based on their respective conduct.
The available information does not establish that the Honda driver acted negligently in this crash.
Electronic Vehicle Data Could Help Reconstruct the Collision
Investigators may be able to use electronic and physical evidence to determine what happened in the seconds before impact.
Potentially important evidence could include:
- Event Data Recorder information.
- Vehicle speed.
- Brake application.
- Steering inputs.
- Highway surveillance footage.
- Dash camera recordings.
- Crash scene photographs.
- Vehicle damage.
- Witness statements.
- Roadway and weather information.
The Honda’s heavily damaged windshield and other physical evidence may also help investigators determine the point and severity of impact.
When Can a Family Pursue a Wrongful Death Claim?
If an investigation establishes that another party’s negligence contributed to a pedestrian’s death, qualifying surviving family members may potentially have rights under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes §§768.16–768.26).
Depending on the circumstances, damages can potentially include compensation for:
- Funeral and burial expenses.
- Medical expenses associated with the victim’s final injuries.
- Loss of financial support and services.
- Loss of companionship and protection.
- Mental pain and suffering for qualifying survivors.
- Certain lost earnings and estate-related losses.
Whether a viable wrongful death claim exists depends on the evidence establishing fault. Nothing reported thus far establishes negligence by the Honda driver.
Crash Caused Major I-95 Closures
The investigation significantly disrupted Friday morning traffic.
The northbound Express Lanes and two general-purpose travel lanes were blocked, with closures beginning around Hallandale Beach Boulevard.
Drivers were advised to use alternative routes, including U.S. 441, U.S. 1, and Florida’s Turnpike, while troopers investigated the scene.
FHP Investigation Remains Ongoing
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal pedestrian crash.
Authorities have not yet explained why the 20-year-old Davie man was attempting to cross I-95 or announced whether the Honda driver will face any charges.
Further investigation may help determine the precise sequence of events and whether any additional factors contributed to the collision.
Remembering the Victim
A fatal pedestrian crash involving someone only 20 years old is a devastating loss for his family and loved ones.
We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends and hope the continuing investigation provides them with answers about the circumstances that led to this tragedy.
