20-Year-Old Driver Killed in Crash With Semi-Truck at I-75 Entrance Ramp Near Punta Gorda

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A 20-year-old driver was killed Thursday morning in a crash involving a passenger vehicle and a semi-truck at the intersection of U.S. 17 and Interstate 75 near Duncan Road in Punta Gorda, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The fatal collision remains under investigation as troopers work to determine all of the circumstances leading up to the crash.

What We Know About the Fatal Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on the morning of July 16, 2026, at the intersection of U.S. 17 and the Interstate 75 entrance ramp near Duncan Road in Charlotte County.

Investigators reported that:

  • A 20-year-old man was driving a Volkswagen GTI eastbound on U.S. 17.
  • A Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer, driven by a 68-year-old man, was traveling westbound in a designated left-turn lane toward the I-75 entrance ramp.
  • The Freightliner entered the intersection while making a left turn under a green left-turn arrow.
  • The Volkswagen entered the intersection and collided with the trailer portion of the semi-truck.

The 20-year-old driver of the Volkswagen suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver was not reported to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased pending notification of family members.

Investigation Remains Ongoing

According to the Florida Highway Patrol’s preliminary investigation, the Volkswagen driver allegedly failed to stop at a red traffic signal before entering the intersection.

While investigators have released preliminary findings, the crash remains under investigation. Law enforcement officers will continue reviewing all available evidence before reaching a final determination regarding the cause of the collision.

Investigators may examine several factors, including:

  • Traffic signal sequencing and timing.
  • Vehicle speeds.
  • Witness statements.
  • Crash scene evidence.
  • Surveillance or traffic camera footage.
  • Event data recorders from the involved vehicles.
  • Roadway conditions and visibility.

As with any serious traffic collision, preliminary findings may be updated as additional evidence becomes available.

Left-Turn and Intersection Crashes Can Be Complex

Although traffic signals often establish the right of way, fatal intersection crashes frequently require detailed accident reconstruction to determine exactly how a collision occurred.

Investigators may analyze:

  • Whether each driver had the legal right of way.
  • Vehicle speed and braking.
  • Driver distraction or impairment.
  • Mechanical issues affecting either vehicle.
  • Visibility conditions.
  • Compliance with all traffic control devices.

Commercial truck collisions can be especially severe due to the size and weight of tractor-trailers, often resulting in catastrophic injuries when smaller passenger vehicles are involved.

Every fatal commercial vehicle crash should be carefully investigated before legal responsibility is determined.

Although the Florida Highway Patrol’s preliminary report indicates the semi-truck driver had a green left-turn arrow, investigators will continue evaluating all available evidence. Liability should never be determined solely based on initial reports, as additional facts may emerge during the investigation.

Depending on the circumstances, surviving family members may have legal rights under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes §§768.16–768.26) if another party’s negligence contributed to the crash.

Potentially liable parties in commercial truck accidents may include:

  • The truck driver.
  • The trucking company.
  • Vehicle maintenance providers.
  • Cargo loading companies.
  • Manufacturers of defective vehicle components.
  • Other motorists whose actions contributed to the collision.
  • Government entities responsible for dangerous roadway conditions, when appropriate.

If negligence is established, eligible surviving family members may be able to recover compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial expenses.
  • Medical expenses incurred before death.
  • Loss of future financial support.
  • Loss of companionship, guidance, and protection.
  • Mental pain and suffering for qualifying survivors.
  • Other damages available under Florida law.

Each case depends on its own facts, and liability cannot be determined until investigators complete a thorough review of the evidence.

Preserving Evidence Is Critical

Evidence collected immediately following a fatal commercial truck crash can be essential to determining exactly what happened.

Important evidence may include:

  • Electronic logging device (ELD) records.
  • Semi-truck event data recorder (“black box”) information.
  • Dash camera footage.
  • Traffic signal timing records.
  • Crash scene photographs.
  • Witness statements.
  • Vehicle inspection and maintenance records.
  • Accident reconstruction reports.

Preserving this evidence early can help ensure investigators and legal representatives have the information necessary to accurately reconstruct the collision.

Investigation Continues

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal crash at the intersection of U.S. 17 and the Interstate 75 entrance ramp near Duncan Road.

Additional information, including the identity of the victim and the final findings of the investigation, may be released as the case progresses.

Remembering the Victim

The sudden loss of a young life in a traffic collision is a heartbreaking tragedy. We extend our sincere condolences to the victim’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time and hope the ongoing investigation provides answers about the circumstances surrounding this fatal crash.
