2 Killed and 2 Injured in Apopka Crash Involving LYNX Van
Authorities are investigating a devastating crash in Apopka that left two people dead and two teenagers seriously injured on Sunday evening. The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the collision at the intersection of Rock Springs Road and Alexandria Place Drive.
According to an FHP report, the crash occurred just after 6 p.m. when a 2023 Ford Mustang driven by an 18-year-old man was traveling south on Rock Springs Road. At the same time, a 2021 Ford E350 ACCESS LYNX passenger van attempted to turn left onto Alexandria Place Drive. Troopers say the van turned directly into the path of the Mustang, leading to a violent impact on the right side of the van. Investigators confirmed that the Mustang was traveling above the posted speed limit at the time of the crash.
Two passengers in the van, an 81-year-old man and a 94-year-old woman, were killed in the collision. Both victims had been wearing their seatbelts. The driver of the van, a 63-year-old man, was not injured and remained on scene to cooperate with law enforcement.
The teenage occupants of the Mustang suffered serious injuries. The driver and his 17-year-old passenger were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
FHP continues to investigate the crash to determine all contributing factors, including speed, visibility, and potential driver error.
Left-turn collisions are among the most severe types of traffic crashes, especially when one vehicle is traveling at high speed. These incidents often occur when drivers misjudge oncoming traffic or attempt to turn with insufficient time or space. In Florida, intersections along busy roadways such as Rock Springs Road can be particularly risky due to heavy traffic, limited lighting in certain areas, and drivers attempting to beat oncoming vehicles.
High-speed impacts increase the likelihood of severe injuries or fatalities, particularly when one vehicle strikes the side of another where occupants have less structural protection.
Who May Be Liable in a Crash Like This
Determining fault in a left-turn crash requires a thorough investigation. Under Florida law, drivers making left turns must yield to oncoming traffic. If a turning driver fails to yield, they may be held responsible for the collision. However, liability can be shared if the oncoming driver was speeding or driving recklessly. Florida’s comparative negligence statute applies, meaning each party’s share of fault affects the amount of compensation available.
In cases involving passenger injuries or wrongful deaths, multiple parties may have claims, including:
- Family members of deceased victims
- Passengers injured due to driver negligence
- Individuals harmed by excessive speeding
Claims may involve compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, lost support, and emotional suffering under the Florida Wrongful Death Act.
Legal Options for Families and Injured Victims
When a crash involves fatalities and serious injuries, it is critical to conduct a timely and comprehensive investigation. Important evidence such as black box data, surveillance video, eyewitness statements, and skid mark analysis can help determine what happened in the moments before impact.
In a crash involving a public-access vehicle such as an ACCESS LYNX van, additional factors may be examined, including driver training, compliance with safety protocols, and whether the van operator was following proper procedures during the turn.
Victims and families may pursue:
- Wrongful death claims
- Personal injury claims
- Claims for pain and suffering
- Medical expenses and future care
- Lost earnings and loss of consortium
