2 Dead, Multiple Students Injured in Polk County School Bus Crash
A high school student and another driver were killed Monday morning after a school bus carrying dozens of students was involved in a four-vehicle crash in Winter Haven, Florida.
The crash happened at approximately 6:15 a.m. on October 5, 2026, according to Polk County authorities.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said the school bus was carrying 39 people, including 37 high school students, the bus driver and the driver’s 9-year-old daughter.
A tenth-grade girl riding on the school bus was killed. The driver of a Jeep involved in the collision also died.
Multiple other people were injured, and authorities reported between five and seven trauma alerts. At least one person was in critical condition following the crash.
Three students were airlifted to hospitals.
What Happened in the Winter Haven School Bus Crash?
Authorities are still investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the collision.
According to Sheriff Judd, a preliminary review of video footage showed the school bus traveling within its lane when a white Chevrolet Malibu traveling in the opposite direction crossed the center line for reasons that remain unknown.
The Malibu struck the school bus, Judd said.
The impact reportedly caused the school bus to collide head-on with a silver Jeep. A fourth vehicle was also involved in the crash.
The school bus rolled over during the collision.
Authorities have emphasized that the investigation is preliminary, and traffic homicide investigators are continuing to collect evidence.
High School Student and Jeep Driver Killed
Two people died as a result of the crash.
Authorities identified one of the victims as a tenth-grade girl who had been riding on the school bus. Her name was not immediately released.
The driver of the Jeep involved in the head-on collision was also killed.
Officials had not released additional identifying information about the victims in the initial reports.
Dozens of Students Taken to Hospitals
The crash prompted a large emergency response because of the number of children aboard the bus.
According to Sheriff Judd, three students were airlifted from the crash scene to hospitals.
Another 22 students were transported to a hospital aboard another bus, while four students were taken for medical evaluation by their families.
Seven additional students, the school bus driver and the driver’s 9-year-old daughter were transported by ambulance.
Authorities said most of those treated for injuries had been released from the hospital by Monday. At least one person was reported to be in critical condition earlier in the day.
The wide range of transportation methods does not necessarily mean every student suffered a serious physical injury. Some students were transported for evaluation following the violent rollover crash.
Students Called Their Families Following the Crash
In the immediate aftermath, students used their cell phones to contact their families while authorities worked to account for everyone aboard the bus.
Officials then began the process of reuniting students with their parents and families.
Polk County Public Schools Superintendent Fred Heid said students are intentionally trained on how to evacuate a school bus during an emergency.
The circumstances surrounding the rollover made those emergency procedures particularly important.
What Caused the Chevrolet Malibu to Cross the Center Line?
One of the central questions investigators will need to answer is why the Chevrolet Malibu allegedly crossed into the school bus’s lane.
According to the preliminary video review described by Sheriff Judd, the bus appeared to have been traveling within its proper lane before the Malibu crossed the center line.
Authorities had not determined why that happened.
Traffic homicide investigators may examine potential evidence including vehicle data, roadway evidence, surveillance or dashboard camera footage, witness statements and the condition of the vehicles.
Investigators may also consider whether driver behavior, distraction, impairment, fatigue, a medical emergency or a mechanical issue played any role.
None of those potential factors has been established in the available information, and it would be premature to identify the cause until investigators complete their review.
Liability After a Multi-Vehicle School Bus Crash
A collision involving a school bus and several passenger vehicles can create complicated questions of liability.
Although preliminary information indicates that the Malibu crossed the center line, investigators will need to reconstruct the entire sequence of events before determining responsibility.
The investigation may examine the actions of each driver and whether any vehicle defect, roadway condition or other circumstance contributed to the collision.
The fact that four vehicles were involved also means investigators may need to determine which impacts caused particular injuries.
Evidence such as video footage can be especially important in establishing the sequence.
Special Considerations When Children Are Injured in Florida Crashes
Crashes involving children can raise additional issues because the full extent of an injury may not always be immediately apparent.
Children injured in serious collisions may require emergency treatment, diagnostic testing, follow-up medical care or rehabilitation depending on their injuries.
Families may also need to document medical expenses and other losses associated with the crash.
When a child has a potential personal injury claim, Florida law also has specific rules concerning claims and settlements involving minors.
Because of those additional requirements, families dealing with significant injuries may benefit from speaking with an experienced Florida personal injury attorney about their individual circumstances.
Wrongful Death Claims After a Fatal Florida School Bus Crash
The death of the tenth-grade student may also lead to an investigation into potential wrongful death liability.
Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, Florida Statutes §§ 768.16 through 768.26, generally provides a framework for claims when a person’s death is caused by another party’s wrongful act, negligence or other legally actionable conduct.
A separate potential wrongful death claim could also arise from the death of the Jeep driver if investigators determine another party’s negligence contributed to that death.
The existence and value of any claim would depend on the evidence and the individual circumstances of each victim and family.
Evidence Will Be Critical in Determining What Happened
Because authorities reportedly have video of at least part of the crash, investigators may have important evidence showing the vehicles’ movements immediately before the collision.
Other potentially relevant evidence could include:
- Video footage of the collision
- Vehicle event data recorders
- School bus camera recordings
- Witness statements
- Crash-scene photographs and measurements
- Tire marks and roadway debris
- Vehicle inspection records
- Cell phone records, if legally obtained and relevant
- Toxicology evidence, if applicable
- Medical records
- 911 calls and emergency response records
The school bus itself may contain additional cameras or electronic systems that could help investigators reconstruct what happened.
Preserving this evidence can also become important if civil claims are later pursued.
Multiple Agencies Responded to the Deadly Crash
The severity of the collision prompted a response from numerous agencies.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Winter Haven Fire Department, Winter Haven Police Department, Haines City Police Department, Polk County Fire Rescue and Polk County Public Schools were among the agencies responding to the crash.
Traffic homicide investigators remained at the scene Monday gathering information.
Authorities said additional details were expected to be released Tuesday.
Investigation Into Deadly Polk County School Bus Crash Continues
Authorities continue to investigate the four-vehicle crash that killed two people and injured multiple others in Winter Haven Monday morning.
Preliminary video evidence reportedly shows a white Chevrolet Malibu crossing the center line and striking a school bus carrying 37 high school students, the bus driver and the driver’s 9-year-old daughter.
The bus then collided head-on with a Jeep, and another vehicle was also involved.
A tenth-grade girl aboard the school bus and the driver of the Jeep were killed.
Dozens of students were transported to hospitals or evaluated following the crash, including three students who were airlifted. Most of those treated had reportedly been released from the hospital by Monday.
Investigators have not yet determined why the Malibu crossed the center line, and authorities have stressed that the information released so far is preliminary.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those killed and hope for a full recovery for everyone injured in this tragic crash.
