19-Year-Old Arrested After Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash in Orlando

A 19-year-old Orlando man was arrested after a deadly early-morning crash at Central Florida Parkway and International Drive, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers identified the suspect as Christopher Laureda. FHP said Laureda ran a red light shortly before 2:45 a.m. on August 30, 2026 and struck another vehicle.

The 29-year-old driver of the other vehicle, who was from Connecticut, later died at the hospital. A 23-year-old Connecticut woman who was riding with him suffered serious injuries.

What Happened in the Orlando Crash?

According to FHP, Laureda was driving near Central Florida Parkway and International Drive when he allegedly ran a red light and collided with another vehicle.

Troopers said Laureda’s vehicle overturned onto its left side after the crash.

The 29-year-old driver of the second vehicle was taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

A 23-year-old woman who was riding in that vehicle was also transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

FHP said Laureda and his three passengers sustained minor injuries.

Troopers Say Driver Left the Scene on Foot

According to FHP, Laureda allegedly left the scene on foot after the collision while his three passengers remained.

Orange County deputies later located and detained him, and state troopers subsequently arrested him.

FHP said Laureda is facing charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving death and DUI manslaughter.

Those allegations are part of an ongoing criminal investigation, and the charges do not by themselves establish civil liability.

Running a Red Light Can Create Serious Civil Liability

If investigators ultimately confirm that Laureda entered the intersection against a red light, that evidence could become significant in a civil wrongful death or personal injury case.

Florida Statute § 316.075 governs driver conduct at traffic control signals and generally requires motorists facing a steady red signal to stop before entering the intersection, subject to limited exceptions.

A violation of a traffic signal may serve as important evidence in determining whether a driver acted negligently.

However, civil liability would still depend on the full facts of the crash, including causation and whether any other contributing factors were present.

DUI Allegations May Affect Both Criminal and Civil Cases

FHP also charged Laureda with DUI manslaughter.

FHP alleges that Laureda fled on foot after the collision.

Leaving the scene can result in serious criminal consequences, but it is distinct from the question of what caused the initial crash.

In a civil case, investigators would still need to determine whether the driver’s conduct before impact caused or contributed to the fatal collision.

Wrongful Death Rights for the Victim’s Family

Because the 29-year-old driver died, Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, Fla. Stat. §§ 768.16 through 768.26, may apply if another person’s negligence or wrongful conduct caused his death.

A wrongful death lawsuit is generally brought by the personal representative of the deceased person’s estate for the benefit of eligible survivors and the estate.

Depending on the circumstances, damages may potentially include funeral expenses, lost support and services, and certain losses suffered by qualifying survivors.

The availability of any claim will depend on the evidence and the relationship between the alleged conduct and the victim’s death.

The 23-year-old passenger who suffered serious injuries may also have a separate personal injury claim.
