18-Year-Old Minibike Rider Killed in Crash with SUV on Lake Trafford Road in Collier County

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A tragic crash in Collier County, Florida claimed the life of an 18-year-old minibike rider after a collision with an SUV on Sunday evening, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The incident highlights the serious risks associated with minibikes and other small motorized vehicles on public roadways.

What We Know About the Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on April 19, 2026, at the intersection of Palm Drive and Lake Trafford Road.

Investigators say the 18-year-old man was traveling northbound on Palm Drive on a gas-powered minibike and was approaching a stop sign at the intersection. At the same time, a 65-year-old woman was driving an SUV eastbound on Lake Trafford Road.

Troopers report that the minibike entered the intersection into the direct path of the SUV, resulting in a collision with the front of the vehicle.

Following the impact, the rider was thrown from the minibike and suffered critical injuries. He was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the SUV was not seriously injured.

The crash remains under investigation.

The Dangers of Minibikes on Public Roadways

Minibikes and similar small motorized vehicles can pose significant dangers when operated on public roads, especially when interacting with full-size vehicles.

Risk factors include:

  • Limited visibility to other drivers
  • Lack of protective features such as seat belts or airbags
  • Lower stability and control compared to standard motorcycles
  • Increased vulnerability to severe injury upon impact

Even low-speed collisions can result in catastrophic or fatal injuries for riders.

Crashes involving minibikes often raise complex legal questions regarding roadway use and liability.

Potential factors that may be evaluated include:

  • Right-of-way at intersections
  • Compliance with traffic control devices, such as stop signs
  • Whether the minibike was legally operated on the roadway
  • Driver awareness and reaction time

A thorough investigation is necessary to determine fault and whether any negligence contributed to the crash.

Wrongful Death Claims Under Florida Law

Under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, Florida Statutes §§ 768.16–768.26, surviving family members may have the right to pursue compensation if negligence played a role in the fatal crash.

Damages may include:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Loss of financial support and future earnings
  • Loss of companionship and guidance
  • Mental pain and suffering

These cases often require detailed analysis of traffic laws, roadway conditions, and witness statements.

Investigation Ongoing

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash and will determine whether any contributing factors or violations were involved.
