1 Killed in Fiery Crash on Blanton Road in Pasco County, FHP Reports
A deadly early morning crash in Dade City claimed the life of a driver after a vehicle veered off the roadway, collided with multiple objects, and burst into flames, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Authorities say the crash occurred along Blanton Road and resulted in severe fire damage to the vehicle, leaving the driver deceased at the scene.
What We Know About the Crash
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, an unidentified man was traveling northbound on Blanton Road early Monday morning when he failed to negotiate a curve just south of Parrish Grove Road. Troopers say the vehicle left the roadway, struck a fence and two trees, and then caught fire upon impact. The driver suffered severe burn injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released, and the crash remains under investigation.
Risks Associated With Run-Off-Road and Fire-Related Crashes
Crashes involving vehicles leaving the roadway and striking fixed objects often result in catastrophic outcomes, especially when combined with post-impact fires.
Common contributing factors in these types of crashes include:
- Excessive speed when approaching curves
- Driver fatigue or impairment
- Poor roadway lighting or visibility
- Loss of vehicle control
- Mechanical failure
When a vehicle catches fire after impact, the likelihood of fatal injuries increases significantly due to rapid fire spread and limited escape time.
Potential Liability in Fatal Single-Vehicle Crashes
Although many single-vehicle crashes initially appear straightforward, a deeper investigation may reveal contributing factors involving other parties.
Potential liable parties may include:
- Government entities: If dangerous roadway design, lack of proper signage, or inadequate lighting contributed to the crash, the responsible agency may share liability
- Vehicle manufacturers: If a defect contributed to the crash or the severity of the fire, a product liability claim may be evaluated
- Maintenance providers: Improper maintenance or mechanical issues may have played a role
- Third parties: In some cases, another vehicle or external factor may have contributed to the driver losing control
Wrongful Death Claims Under Florida Law
Under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, Florida Statutes §§ 768.16–768.26, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue compensation if negligence contributed to the crash.
Damages may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical expenses prior to death
- Loss of financial support and services
- Loss of companionship and protection
- Mental pain and suffering
A thorough investigation is critical to identify all potential sources of liability and recovery.
Investigation Ongoing
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash, including what led the driver to lose control while navigating the curve.
