1 Killed, 1 Injured in Rear-End Crash Involving Semi on I-95 in Melbourne
A deadly crash on Interstate 95 in Melbourne, Florida left one person dead and another seriously injured after a vehicle collided with a stopped semi-truck, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash caused major traffic delays before all lanes were eventually reopened.
What We Know About the Crash
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 6:00 a.m. on April 28, 2026, in the northbound lanes of I-95 near mile marker 191 at the Wickham Road exit in Brevard County.
Troopers say a 2017 Dodge Journey was traveling northbound in the inside lane when the driver failed to stop for traffic ahead.
A 2015 Mack semi tractor-trailer was stopped due to traffic conditions when the Dodge Journey struck the rear of the truck.
The driver of the Dodge Journey was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in the vehicle sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
The semi-truck driver was not injured and remained at the scene.
All northbound lanes of I-95 were temporarily shut down as emergency crews responded and investigators processed the crash. The roadway has since reopened.
The identity of the deceased driver has not yet been released.
The Dangers of Rear-End Collisions
While rear-end crashes are common, they can become deadly—especially when large commercial vehicles are involved.
Key risk factors include:
- Following too closely
- Distracted driving
- Sudden traffic slowdowns
- Failure to react in time
When a passenger vehicle collides with a semi-truck, the size and weight difference can lead to catastrophic outcomes.
Highway Driving Risks
Crashes on high-speed roadways like I-95 often result in severe injuries due to:
- Limited stopping distance at high speeds
- Heavy traffic congestion
- Sudden braking conditions
- Multi-lane traffic patterns
Drivers must remain alert and maintain a safe following distance at all times.
Legal Considerations in Rear-End Crashes
In many cases, the driver who rear-ends another vehicle may be presumed at fault. However, a full investigation is still necessary.
Authorities may evaluate:
- Traffic conditions at the time of the crash
- Brake lights and visibility
- Driver attentiveness and reaction time
- Any mechanical issues
Each case must be reviewed based on its specific facts.
Wrongful Death and Injury Claims Under Florida Law
Under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, Florida Statutes §§ 768.16–768.26, families who lose a loved one in a crash may be entitled to pursue compensation.
Injury victims may also seek compensation for:
- Medical expenses
- Lost wages
- Pain and suffering
- Long-term rehabilitation
These claims can help victims and families recover after a serious accident.
Investigation Ongoing
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash and determine all contributing factors.
