1 Dead After Two-Vehicle Crash in Davie; Southbound University Drive Shut Down

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A tragic two-vehicle crash in Davie left one person dead Thursday afternoon and caused major road closures on South University Drive near Southwest 36th Street, according to the Davie Police Department. The fatal collision prompted a full response from traffic homicide detectives as authorities work to determine what led to the deadly crash.

Davie Police officers responded to the scene shortly after the crash occurred on South University Drive, a major north–south corridor in Broward County. When officers arrived, they found one victim who was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

Key details released by police include:

  • The crash involved two vehicles
  • All drivers remained at the scene and fully cooperated with investigators
  • No arrests have been announced at this time
  • Traffic homicide detectives from Davie PD are actively investigating

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim or specifics about how the crash unfolded.

Due to the crash investigation, all southbound lanes of University Drive were shut down at SW 36th Street. Police advised drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes, including:

  • South Pine Island Road
  • Davie Road

Heavy congestion was reported throughout the afternoon as investigators documented the scene and cleared debris.

Even without confirmed details, fatal two-vehicle collisions commonly involve factors such as:

  • Speeding or aggressive driving
  • Failure to yield or improper turns
  • Distracted driving (phone use, inattention)
  • Red-light or stop-sign violations
  • Impaired driving
  • Mechanical failure or tire blowouts
  • Failure to maintain lane

Traffic homicide detectives will examine:

  • Vehicle damage patterns
  • Skid marks and debris fields
  • Surveillance and traffic camera footage
  • Witness statements
  • Vehicle speed data or “black box” crash records

Their findings will determine fault and whether any criminal or civil liability applies.

When a loved one is killed in a crash due to another driver’s negligence—even when the driver stayed at the scene—the surviving family may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida law.

Potential claims may include:

1. Negligence of the At-Fault Driver

If evidence shows the other driver:

  • Failed to yield
  • Was speeding
  • Made an improper turn
  • Was distracted
  • Drove too fast for traffic or weather conditions

they may be legally responsible for damages.

2. Claims Against Vehicle Owners

If the vehicle was borrowed or owned by another party, Florida’s dangerous instrumentality doctrine may apply, allowing additional avenues for recovery.

3. Negligent Maintenance Claims

If a mechanical failure contributed, a repair shop or parts manufacturer may also bear liability.

4. Roadway Conditions

In rare circumstances, government entities may share responsibility if improper traffic control, poor signage, or roadway defects contributed to the crash.

Damages Available in Florida Wrongful Death Claims

Under the Florida Wrongful Death Act (Fla. Stat. § 768.16–768.26), eligible surviving family members may seek compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Loss of the decedent’s earnings and benefits
  • Loss of companionship and protection
  • Mental pain and suffering for spouses, parents, and children
  • Medical expenses incurred before death
  • Loss of household support and services

Because Florida law restricts who may recover and how claims must be brought, families should contact an experienced wrongful death attorney as soon as possible.
